Topic: "Wildwood Memories"

This is just a song that I wrote to try and explain to myself why I constantly think about the mountains of western North Carolina, and also why I want to one day move back there.

Wildwood Memories By Jeff Gilpin

May 20th 2008

Intro

[G] [D] [G] [Em]

Verse 1

[C]Sometimes when I get a little [G]homesick

[C]Sometimes when I miss my mountain [D]home

I [C]break out my six string and start [G]playing

That song that [C]helps my mind meander as I play [Em]on [D]

Verse 2

[C]I heard Wildwood Flower as a [G]young ‘un

It wasn’t ‘til [C]later I heard words sung a[D]long

[C]Now I hear that music and sur[G]render

But [C]in my mind words of a different [Em]song [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [D]are [G] [Em]

Verse 3

There [C]was a day I thought I’d [G]forgotten

I [C]seemed to have let the mountains slip my [D]mind

Then a [C]trip took me up the grade near [G]Old Fort

And I [C]started humming that old tune as I [Em]climbed[D]

Verse 4

[C]Starting down I could see Black [G]Mountain

[C]Further on Swannanoa [D]too

[C]Past Oteen and then on in to [G]Asheville

[C]All those mountain memories staying [Em]true [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [D]are [G] [Em]

Verse 5

I [C]guess that’s why it always seems I’m [G]seeking

A [C]way to settle roots in textured [D]land

A [C]land with deep valleys and steep [G]rises

Some [C]place to help me feel at home a[Em]gain [D]

Verse 6

[C]Home to me is looking out my [G]window

And [C]seeing ridges blue that fill the [D]sky

And [C]carried on the wind that distant [G]melody

The [C]one that takes me back to days gone [Em]by [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [Em]are [C]

Wherever you are[G]

Re: "Wildwood Memories"

Hi Jeff,

A nice way to remember where you spent your youth.  Having spent most of my younger years in Lincolnshire which is probably the flattest county in the UK, I always find hilly and mountainous country very interesting.

Thank you and well done,

Roger

Hey Roger - Thanks - I always wanted to be from England actually. It's where my forefathers are from for the most part.

Hi Jeff - just gave this one the old basharoo and like it very much.  I have been in a creative slump lately, but you just keep on crankin' 'em out . . . keep it up, dude.  James

Re: "Wildwood Memories"

Hey James - Thanks very much. I'm kind of taking a break while my son is home visiting but I had this idea and decided to write it down. I have no doubt that you'll have another gem posted before too long.

Take Care and hope you have a great Memorial Day.

Re: "Wildwood Memories"

Hey Daddy - Thanks very much. I do miss the mountains. I had a visit to  them yesterday but only for the afternoon and had to come back shortly after I got there.

Re: "Wildwood Memories"

Lovely song Jets,

I know your feeling about missing the home place. But thankfully im surrounded by beautiful mountains here. Just need some sunshine to go with them at the moment.

Re: "Wildwood Memories"

Hey Lena - Thanks - I even like the days that are not sunny. Just give me tall green all about me and I'm happy.
