Topic: "What A Friend We Have In Kitty"

Here is another silly little ditty based on 'borrowed' melody & chords.
Hey - it's not great art, but it's fun and it's easy!
Enjoy . . .
[SONG]
{t:What A Friend We Have in Kitty}
{st:by, James McCormick, 1/19/2007}
{c:to the tune of "What A Friend We Have In Jesus"}

[D]What a friend we have in [G]Kitty,
[D]She is so relaxed right [A]there
[D]Sleeping perfect in the [G]sunlight
[A]Looks as if she has no [D]cares
But [A]just within a beast is [D]lurking
[G]Predatory [D]fangs and fatal [A]claws
[D]If you and I were [G]tiny
[D]We'd be [A]twitching [A7]in her [D]jaws.
. . . .
[D]What a friend we have in [G]Kitty
[D]Someone we can groom and [A]feed
[D]Softest fur and eyes that [G]sparkle
[A]Little claws that make us [D]bleed
[A]But it is so grati-[D]fying
[G]When she [D]comes to say hel-[A]lo
[D]Does she even really [G]like us
I [D]guess we'll [A]never [A7]really [D]know.
. . . .
[D]What a friend we have in [G]Kitty
[D]Pondering life's myster-[A]ies
[D]Every day she sits and [G]wonders
[A]If our flesh will taste O-[D]K
[A]As we're sleeping and de-[D]fenseless
[G]Kitty [D]plans her big at-[A]tack
[D]Once she's grown a little [G]bigger
[D]We shall [A]be a [A7]tasty [D]snack.
. . . .
[D]What a friend we have in [G]Kitty
[D]Life is better with her [A]here
[D]Now our home is never [G]lonely
And [A]everything is full of [D]hair
[A]Daily we are called upon to [D]serve her
[G]Fix her [D]meals and medi-[A]cate
Our [D]lives are focused on her [G]comfort
[D]Scooping [A]litter [A7]is our [D]fate.

Re: "What A Friend We Have In Kitty"

Hi James,

I was very impressed with this song.

I live, in a caravan, in Portugul at an orange grove. There are only 5 of us here. Michael, the owner, who has 15 cats, one of which (TT) has adopted me and has lived with me for 6 months now and is my constant companion. Neighbour Debbie has 3 cats and there are between 6 and 10 ferals around at any one time. I therefore have quite a collection of feline photographs and your song gave me an idea for a video. This URL will take you there and I hope you like my interpertation of your efforts.

My 'recording studio' is my awning and all the photo's are mine. As a little aside I was particularly pleased with the picture of Liver and her 3 kittens as she is completely wild and will not let any of us within 10 feet of her. TT (Twinkle Toes), my companion who likes to play in puddles, opens the video.

I look forward to your comments and anyone else's who cares to watch it.

Re: "What A Friend We Have In Kitty"

By popular request, well by James McCormicks request actually, I have also posted this song to YouTube at

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INIhGiU_SE8

I think that this is easier to access.

However if you want the DVD to own it is available only by mail order through this site at a mere 10.00 plus p&p

Autographed  copy by Roger        20.00 plus p&p

Autographed by Roger and James    30.00 plus p&p

If you want the composers autograph you will have to wait for the time machine to be completed.

James this is private for you so I know no one else will read it. We go thirds with the profits after expences on this. However if Charles Converse does not collect his third in person we will split that also. Is that OK with you?

OK, friends . . . here is a BLAST FROM THE PAST!

This song was originally posted here way back a year and a half ago.  As you can see from the post above, Roger Guppy made a dandy video with his excellent version of this song in January of 2207.

I just today got around to recording my take on this little kitty ditty . . . http://www.myspace.com/r200james

Hope you find it 'purrfect'

Re: "What A Friend We Have In Kitty"

Hi James,

As the original recording artist of this song I have to say that I really enjoyed your 'cover' of it lol lol lol

I have always enjoyed this amusing song of yours and I do still play it from time to time. I am pleased that have got around to recording it yourself as this was the first song that I ever recorded and put on the Internet.

By the way I am 'purrfectly' willing to remove my version from YouTube now that you have your own.

Re: "What A Friend We Have In Kitty"

Hi Roger,
Glad you like my take on this little kitty ditty!  I have gotten some rather impassioned feedback from the MySpace recording - seems that I have irked lovers of cats & lovers of old hymns with this little tongue-in-cheek ode to our feline friends.  I have responded to these comments by assuring them that no offense was ever intended . . .

This lovely old tune was also used during World War I in an anti-war song entitled, "When This Bloody War is Over".
Here is an excellent solo version on guitar:

And a slightly more ribald sing-along version:

Roger, please don't remove your YouTube version of this song!  It is very good, and I am quite proud to have this version of it 'out there'  for the world to see.  James
