Hanging on to the Memories By Jeff Gilpin

May 7th, 2008

Intro

[D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

I remember the [G]mountains I’d play out all [D]day

From sunrise to [A]sunset outside I did [D]stay [D7]

My steep sloping [G]mountains nary a [D]car

Would disturb my [A]mountain that ranged wide and [D]far [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Then off to the [G]city but not far a[D]way

I still could see [A]them on off in the [D]grey[D7]

Made me some [G]friends there all of them [D]true

Still growing up [A]country in those ridges so [D]blue [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Eventually I left [G]them and in the world I did [D]find

My life in the [A]mountains would be left far be[D]hind [D7]

But the world’s full of [G]people a wide varie[D]ty

And I hoped that they all [A]would be friend with [D]me [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Friends I did make [G]there as I lived far and [D]wide

Though not from my [A]mountains they were still good in[D]side [D7]

Met one friend so [G]special from a land far a[D]way

So much like my [A]mountains she’s still with me to[D]day [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Now I’ll not for[G]get the roads I’ve been [D]down

All over this [A]wide world now I’ve come back a[D]round [D7]

To the land in the [G]foothills though not mountains it’s [D]true

One day I’ll get [A]back there until then what I’ll [D]do …[D7]is

Chorus

Hang on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[G]bide [D]

Re: "Hanging on to the Memories"

Very very nice, Jeff.  It's strange what we remember - bits & snatches of stuff from childhood that perhaps at that moment didn't seem very memorable but nonetheless have lived on as vivid reminders of when we were young.

Re: "Hanging on to the Memories"

Hi Jeff,

It is surprising what things we can recall from our childhood and your song made me sit back and reflect on some memories from my youth. Thank you.

Re: "Hanging on to the Memories"

Thanks James and Roger - A lot of my music is written to try and capture memories and that's what I tried with this.
