Topic: PICKUPS

Hey everyone.
I was just looking for a little info on pickups, such as, are those exterior type of like stick on the outside of your guitar pickups decent??  how bout transducer pickups?? what type pick up would you recommend for a acoustic or classical  guitar  that has no electronics whatsoever?

And would you know how much on average it would cost to put a hole in the bottom for that jack or whatever??

Thanks!!!

Mark

Re: PICKUPS

Here are two sources that are considered some of the best in the industry...I'm sure there are lots of others as well... They make pickups for most acoustic instruments...

If you are fairly handy with tools then it's not much a challenge to install an endpin jack in your guitar...it will replace the rear strap button. Will require drilling and soldering.

Re: PICKUPS

that's about electric guitar pickups though... I'm talkng classical and acoustic.

Re: PICKUPS

oh and thanks Jay..... I'll check it out.
But I don't have a strap button on mine...  it's a full body classical.  I'd have to get a hole put in the   bottom....

Re: PICKUPS

Hi Linus ,
My favorite for accoustics is the Fishman bridge saddle pickup . It comes with the endpin pin jack so you don't have to modify the guitar a whole lot . I have two vintage flat tops that I don't want to modify at all so if I want to play one at a jam I keep a Dean Markley Pro Mag
that just slips into the sound hole  . Excellent accoustic tone .......That one is also handy when we have someone show up at a jam with a straight accoustic and needs more volume...........

Re: PICKUPS

Thanks...'

Do you use the same kind of amp for acoustic and classical???

Re: PICKUPS

Hi LINUS, you're right, my mistake.
I have a guitar collection, acoustic, 5 martins and 4 gibsons.
One of my martins the "MARTIN-D1" is the only electro-acoustic guitar I have. I searched for acoustic pick-ups and I am just afraid that my guitar will "suffer" by using acoustic pick-ups.
I work with the 60ties method = 2 mics:
- one on a certain distance of the soundhole
- one near the 13th fret.
Unfortunately my daughters dog a Jack Daniels or is it Russell who toke one of my mics to use it as a bone.
- SOME PEOPLE TELL that this gives the best sound (see Bob Dylan, Donovan in the 60ties), IF YOU PLACE YOUR MICS CORRECT.
- OTHERS DON'T LIKE THAT SYSTEM AND THEY LOVE PICKUPS, a lot of different brands.
It is of course a lot easier, an electro-acoustic guitar. You plug it in an acoustic amp and there you go. I wanted 2 years ago to "transform" some of my acoustics into electro-acoustics. The price here for the best pick-up was about 75$, and I changed my mind, having already one, and providing a fantastic sound. SO, I USE THE OLD METHOD, which is TIME CONSUMING and you need to find out the correct position of yous microphones.

Re: PICKUPS

Thanks I might try that next time.......

Re: PICKUPS

Here in Irl you can get a Fishman fitted for not much more than the price of the pickup itself. Worthwhile if the guitar is good.

Of the external types, requiring no permanent changes to the guitar (a) I've seen some serious classical guitar buskers using external stick-on type (b) The soundhole pickups e.g. Dean Markley Pro-mag (or my Artec) don't work at all with nylon strings - they detect only the vibrations of a metal string - but I like them on steel strings.

I recently tried both a classical and a steel-string (neither were very high quality guitars) on an acoustic amp and both sounded great.
