Topic: will new strings help

I have a old Carson(dunno if anyones heard of it before) it has an OK sound.A buddy of mine has a SX which cost him quite abit.it sounds superb!my question is-If i get the same strings(Dedario's)will they make my guitar sound any beter?I dont want to buy expensive strings for no reason

Re: will new strings help

i dont know if this works. But cheaper strings are good only if for example i want to practice playing my guitar.

but if high performance is needed usually in band showdown, then, maybe strings with better quality is better..quality means expensive.

Re: will new strings help

String choice is very subjective; what sounds good to me on my guitar might sound awful to you on yours.  You just need to to experiment.  I've been buying a different brand/type of strings each time I change them for about 10 months now, and I just found something I like the sound of that doesn't bind at the nut.  Just keep looking til you find some that sound good to you.

Re: will new strings help

What do you consider expensive?  I can get just about any D'Addorio strings in a single set for about $7 (American) at the local shop.  $7 doesn't sound too expensive for a risk on whether the strings will make your guitar sound better to me, but I can see how it would to someone else.

Consider string material, what you want your guitar to sound like (brash or mellow, loud or not so loud, etc.), and what you can afford to spend.  How you want your guitar to sound will make a difference of whether to buy nickle wound strings, bronze phosphur, silk & steel, etc.

However, to answer your initial question, new strings will almost certainly make your guitar sound DIFFERENT.  Whether or not the difference is a HELP is entirely a matter of your personal taste.  Strings don't last forever, so if they're getting old just about anything will be an improvement in the guitar's sound.  Putting lighter strings on may put less stress on the neck and allow a lower action, but then again maybe not.  Depends on how your guitar is built.

Re: will new strings help

New strings always sound good.  I wouldn't spend a whole lot on a set of strings.  Buy them in bulk, and change them frequently.

Having said that, the primary driver of tone for a guitar is the guitar itself.  No strings are going to make a beater sound like a masterpiece.  Put new strings on it, and if that doesn't improve things, go get a new instrument.

Re: will new strings help

You said you had an old guitar, how old?
What is the condition of the guitar?
Yes, strings can make a difference.
I had an older guitar, I wanted to keep it in playing condition. First because it was old I had to go from light strings to extra light. The guitar isn't used for any major playing, but it is used for some of the slower softer songs. In the past I've taken slightly damaged guitars that were supposed to use the metal strings and placed nylon strings on them.
Before you invest in the guitar you must decide is it worth investing in vs. buying a new one. Then you must acknowledge what it will be used for. What I mean is, don't put a couple hundred into something for sintimental value that's only going to sit on a shelf and gather dust, but then don't invest zero into something that has become your livelyhood.

If you're not happy with what you have...
Then you'll never be happy with what you get...

If it means anything, I put some Eric Clapton Signature strings on my $50 Rogue, and it made it sound close to a Martin (not quite there).

I always purchase Elixir mediums for the acoustic and for electric Ernie Ball.
The Elixir strings last twice as long and range from 10-15 greenbacks. 3CF
