Topic: THE 70ties & 80ties = a strange period

- Is it coincidence or not, I believe that the "aids" problem started here.
- Is it coincidence that what started in the early 70-ties "GLAMROCK" or "GLITTER ROCK" were a typical early 70-ties problem. A MUSICAL PHENOMENON.
End 60ties and early 70ties, people who adored the fantastic solos, up to 20 minutes, started to go back to the R&R basics.
To distinguish them selves, and to get more than enough attention, artists started to dress like a woman, using tons of make-up, DAVID BOWIE, MARC BOLAN, GARY (pedo)GLITTER, even the ROLLING STONES.
Search and find how they looked back then.
THE KINKS with their mega-hit LOLA: boys would be girls and girls would be boys. That was the philosophy.
A strange fact, all these glam & glitter stopped around 1975, did the SEX PISTOLS, and other PUNK bands cause this? I think YES.
On the other hand the "real DISCO phenomenon started to dominate every hitparade.

About the 80ties: there were some huge hits, we can discuss again about Soft Cell's TAINTED LOVE, but what do you remember about soft cell except "tainted love."But in the 80ties started a new phenomenon: SYNTH-POP, NEW WAVE (I still don't know what this means.)
What happened to the early 80ties toppers, like ADAM ANT, ABC, BRONSKI BEAT, GARLAND JEFFREY'S, a lot of people would ask WHO? well the man with a huge hit: take me to the matador
- CULTURE CLUB: they were big but only for 2-3 years, and what phenomenon did reoccur? The KINKS phrase: boys would be girls and girls would be boys. A new impulse to dress, using make-up.
- HUMAN LEAGUE: how many hits
- HAROLD FALTERMEYER with the song for BEVERLY HILLS COP Axel F

Please give your opinions.

Re: THE 70ties & 80ties = a strange period

Rock'n'roll dressing-up goes back a long way, just look at some of Little Richard's stage outfits. Then there's Elvis dressing in pink or gold sequins. The real question is when did rock get dull and boring. One such nadir was around 1970 when everyone wore denim and t-shirts.

You are wrong about Punk stopping Glam, in many ways punks were trying to get back to Bowie's Ziggy Stardust look, the Damned were huge Sweet fans emulating their heros with a halloween look. One of the key things about the British rock scene 76-77 was many of the older rock groups were off in America or fighting their record contract or taking a year off. Left without decent rock their fans decided to D-I-Y. New Wave was just a tag for groups that were too late to be punk and didn't want to be judged as punk, in many ways their sound was similar just less brutal.

The Eighties New Wave stopped after Live Aid. Why? Well alot of punters got turned on to big Stadium gigs after being at Live Aid and alot of British 'New Wave' bands couldn't hold their own in a Stadium, Americans like Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Tina Truner etc. were in their element.
