David Gilmoure from the album Animals song Dogs (there are 2 similar ones). Bluesy but rocks. Gilmoure is the master of knowing when not to play a note. For any of you youngin's out there haven't heard this...give it a listen. It will leave you speechless. Also check out his playing on Welcome to the Machine especially Shine on You Crazy Diamond. #$#$^&%$$!! Fantastic guitar work
Some oldies worth a listen.
Allan Holdsworth's solo on "In the Dead of Night" from UK's debut album.
Eric Clapton on White Room, classic.
Mick Taylor's closing solo after Keyes sax on "Can't you hear me Knockin" from Sticky Fingers.
Steve Howe on Paul Simon's "America" from Yesterdays
Steve Hunter on the Sweet Jane intro from Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal.
I love "ERUPTION" by VAN HALEN

All excellent solos. Thanks for pointing those out. With the exception of Clapton, these are all guys who never get the respect they deserve
Yeah the Stones were definitely were at their peak with Mick Taylor , I love Denny Dias on Steely Dan`s Bohdisattva , and the prog rock vibe is generally not my bag so to speak , but it really is superb .

Exile is my favorite.
Bohdisattva is great and I always like Larry Carlton on Kid Charlemagne, too.

I haven't listened to SRv's Little Wing is awhile. It's a great one
Stairway to heaven.....anything by ac dc... and going out on a limb APPLE TREE by WOLFMOTHER
I have unique ones actually ... to me a great solo isn't an awesome guitarist who blows everyone away ... the mood of the song, the style, etc come into play ... some of my favs are:
George Lynch/Dokken - In My Dreams
Jerry Cantrell/Alice in Chains - Them Bones
Chris DeGarmo/Michael Wilton (Queensryche) - Breaking the Silence
Adrian Smith/Iron Maiden - Stranger in a Strange Land

Very cool stuff Russell, the competitions of musical talent here are the ones that should be viewed my millions and millions instead of that American Idol crud. Thanks for the link.

Well said, but unfortunately, Idol is the only way the industry can sell music these days.
btw: the runners up were pretty good too. The guy from Pittsburgh was a lot of fun to watch.
It doesn't come anywhere near Cliffs of Dover, but I think EJ's solo in Desert Rose is pretty darn good.
