Topic: "Rocking Chair Blues"

This is just a song I’ve been working on this week and finally finished. I had this tune in my head but couldn’t figure out what words to put to it so I got to thinking about places I’ve been to and wanted to see again.

The Rocking Chair Blues By Jeff Gilpin

March 2nd 2008

Verse 1

[E7]I wanna go back to Charleston

[E7]And stay by the sea

[E7]Last time that I was there

[E7]You should’ve seen me

[A]Walking on the beaches

[A]Staying out all night

[E7]Howling at the moon

[E7]Until it dropped out of sight

[B7]Had myself a good time

[A]Feeling just great

[E7]Now I wanna head back down again

[E7]But I have to wait [A]

Verse 2

[E7]Wanna go back to Nebraska

[E7]Where I lived way back when

[E7]Last time that I was there

[E7]…Where should I begin

[A]Quite a lot of eateries

[A]Friendly people too

[E7]They work hard and they play

[E7]There’s quite a lot to do

[B7]I wonder if the Old Market

[A]Is still a hopping spot

[E7]I guess I should go check and see

[E7]If it is or is not [A]

Verse 3

[E7]It’s been a year or three

[E7]Since I been back home

[E7]The place that I was born in

[E7]And left before too long

[A]The valley in the mountains

[A]Where the ridge is kind of blue

[E7]I hear it’s occupied today

[E7]By those who have moved to

[B7]Relocated there from the

[A]Places where they’re from

[E7]So it’s not like I remembered

[E7]From my childhood that's long done [A]

Verse 4

[E7]I have always had a hankering

[E7]To live in mountains tall

[E7]Not live like a mountain man

[E7]But I still have heard the call

[A]Where there’re trees and mountain meadows

[A]As far as you can see

[E7]Only oceans of forest

[E7]To look back at you and me

[B7]And they’re not saying nothing

[A]Or honking from their cars

[E7]Just swaying in that mountain air

[E7]I hope it’s in the stars [A]

Verse 5

[E7]For now my only travels

[E7]Will be back and forth to job

[E7]Trading in my lifetime

[E7]And hoping I don’t rob

[A]Too much of my youthfulness

[A]And become contrary

[E7]I’m hoping I don’t waste myself

[E7]Until I’m in misery

[B7]I’m sure before too long

[A]I’ll punch my final clock

[E7]Go out to the time and place

[E7]Where life will start to rock [E7sus4]

…in the chair that is [E7sus4]

…that rocking chair [E7]

Re: "Rocking Chair Blues"

Ah, so so good,

I feel God made youself and James from the same mould.

We bought my Mam a rocking chair when my dad passed. My Mam was only in her forties then. But she loved her chair, and many babies were cuddled/ loved /kissed and sung to
by her in that same chair. She was a great story teller. The big and small would listen to her for hours as she related and  instilled her own past memories to us... One of my abideing memories of her is her in that big ole Rocking Chair.
My brother has it now. I still love to sit in it when i visit him.

Thanks for the Happy memories Jets.

Old Doll.
