Topic: Getting the timing right

Practice,practice,practice. We have all been told this. But how many times can you play Mary had a little lamb without going insane.( 201 I believe) Most of us start out with great ambition to be a great guitarist. Problem is your ambition can go by the way side when you get bored or things are to difficult. Start playing with other people as soon as you can. It does not matter at what level of playing your at. Playing with others will help improve your ability to keep proper time.This is so over looked by begginers becausee they are afraid to sound bad in front of other people. Playing with others or a group will bring the fun and excitement back to why you started playing in the first place. Proper timing of a song will help a LOT to improve your playing ability. So when your guitar is just collecting dust,get out there and play with some folks,You will be glad you did. For begginer help, check this out.

totally! playing with a good drummer is so much better than a mentronome i also love how two guitars playing at the same time can accent eachother and come up with some cool stuff.  the only problem with a band is that you might get stuck with some people who totally stink!

yeah, totally agree with you 'jpage' I had a session a little while back with a friend who is an awsome guitarist...I played some really simple blues lead patterns while he strummed and finger picked in the background!!  I'm sure it was pretty rubbish by any other standard but for me it felt great to improvise and as if I had actually put some of what I had learned into practice! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cool.gif" border=0 alt="Cool">


I think if you were a beginner, a band probably wouldn't let you play in their band for real would they!?  I think 'guitar man' may be referring to simple jamming sessions with other guitarists of roughly the same standard?

I agree totally with all that has been said. I remember starting out on the guitar myself and being overwhelmed by all the information out there about the 'hows' and 'wherefores' of playing the so called correct way. It wasn't till I played with an accomplished player that I quickly learned many thing I had struggled with. It is important to have an 'experience' of something rather than just think you know it.


Learning 'Hey Hey' (Eric Clapton, Unplugged) was so hard till I saw someone play it and jammed along.


So find a guitar buddy and get on with it, you'll love it.

Definitely!  I have suggested to Chordie Admin that they have a section on the forum that allows people that live in the same area to get in touch with each other ... precisely for the same reasons as above!  I know I would benefit from it massively and I'm sure loads of other people would too.  (Sorry to keep banging on about it 'Admin'!!) <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">
