Topic: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

THIS IS A LIST ABOUT RIFFS, GREAT RIFFS, EVEN THE BEST RIFFS.
I will add some comment after posting my list, who was a big time consumer. I worked already months on this list, and putting it in WORD. I found this in a tiny little book in Finland, tiny but amazing facts and I don't agree with some riffs, so instead of giving the list of the 20 riffs from my little book; I will make MY LIST TOO. All these riffs = instant recognition, like SMOKE o, the WATER, from  the first chord you recognise the song.
I REALLY HOPE THAT YOU POST YOUR LIST, 3, 5, 10 IT'S ABOUT YOUR ALL TIME RIFF LIST.
1)  SWEET CHILD O'MINE (gun's and roses)
2)  SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT (Nirwana)
3)  WHOLE LOTTA LOVE (Led Zeppelin)
4)  SMOKE ON THE WATER (Deep Purple)
5)  ENTER SANDMAN (Metallica)
6)  LAYLA (Eric Clapton)
7)  MASTER OFPUPPETS (Metallica)
8)  BACK IN BLACK (AC/DC)
9)  VOODOO CHILD,slight return (JIMI HENDRIX)
10) PARANOID (BLACK SABBATH)
Smells like TEEN spirit: TEEN is the DUTCH WORD for TOE. It's funny, it sounds like "smelling feet"
The list contains 10 more titles, and it won't surprise me to see the same names.
MY LIST (only 5 today)
1) SMOKE ON THE WATER (Deep Purple)
2) SWEET HOME ALABAMA (LYNERD SKYNERD)
3) VOODOO CHILD (JIMI HENDRIX)
4) SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT.
5) SATISFACTION (Rolling Stones)

Re: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

Intro to "Hanging Around" by Counting Crows.

I like bass riffs.  The bass riff that is the foundation of the Chuck Mangione song "Bellavia" is wonderful.  Simple, basic, straightforward, in-the-box riff that sets the tone for the song.

The bass riffs in "Magic Bus" and "My Generation".

The bass riff in "You Can Call Me Al."  I still don't think it's possible to play that fast with that much distinction, but apparantly it must be.  Joseph Shamblala is incredible.

Victor Wootten playing "Amazing Grace", hard to beat.

Simple country riff on Johnny Cash's "Wreck of the Old 97".  It's so easy, but I still can't get it right.

- Zurf

Granted B chord amnesty by King of the Mutants (Long live the king).
If it comes from the heart and you add a few beers... it'll be awesome! - Mekidsmom

Re: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

an amazing riff that has been used by a lot of musicians comes from BoDidley. I dont know the song he done with it, I was told by Jake Burns from stiff little fingers that it was originally Bo. jake stole it for a song on his solo album "drinking again" But also ( and now lots will think "ahhhh, I know what one ye mean now") George Michael used the same riff for his song "Faith", also covered by Robbie Williams. Quite a few songs have used this riff and it is a superb one

But i think any from Ac dc are just probably the best Rock riffs you can get.

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

VERY interesting, I saw some on youtube, the "fascinating" part is, you can't see nothing, stage still  dark, one or 2 STRUMS and you know at the spot which song it is. I need to add 1 comment, having all the PETER GREEN Fleetwood Mac songs, there is an album, and 2 consecutive songs have exactly the same 30"" long intro, 100% identical.
One of the greatest RIFF specialists is KEITH RICHARDS, I prefer the name KEITH RIFFARDS.
- Brown Sugar, Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonk Woman. Also Deep PURPLE has some fantastic riffs.
- The EAGLES: Hotel California, but on a live album, the intro starts almost as a Spanish Flamenco intro, changing after more than a minute in the Riff we all know.
Also a great one is KASHMIR by Led Zeppelin.

Hi Southpaw

You are probably right. I know these days it's keith but when it came out on record in the 60s pre-video days I seem to remember that on the promotional film or whatever the opening scene was Mick Taylor playing the intro just sitting on the edge of a porch or something. Never mind no worries.  I did not play my first gig until I was 62 years old and still play the song now with Brown Sugar and  Sweet Home Alabama.  At heart I am an old 50s Rock n Roller though and try to keep that music alive in England.

Thanks for your comments

Alex

Sweet tune by Maiden Clansman ... I'm actually in the process of learning that one ... about 3/4 done ... of course I haven't been able to do the solo's ... just the main riffs but it sounds sweet ... the live version is definitely better!

Re: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

How about

'Oh Well' by Fleetwood Mac

'Mannish Boy' by Muddy Waters (and full tribute to Jeff Healey's 'Hoochie Coochie Man' cover from the Roadhouse soundtrack

Was 'It's a long way to the top' by AC/DC an actual song or was that a dream?  I think it had a great riff whatever!!!

lol

I'm the son of rage and love

Re: THE BEST GUITAR RIFFS IN THE WORLD...EVER!...

Have to agree bone ... "It's a long way to the top " is an awesome song ... one of my favs from ACDC ... how they ever came up with the idea of the bagpipes is beyond but it makes the song that much better
