N is for Nakers Percussion Station
This is a really cool set-up. It's like a make-shift home- made drum kit made from raw products of nature. It's used mainly in African and World Beat music. Peter Gabriel's drummer uses this get-up in "The Last Temptation Of Christ" soundtrack.
The inspiration for the Nakers set came from a sound sculpture creation from American Percussion, the Naggara drums, in response to interest for a smaller, mass-produced version. The setup includes two clay, dumbek-shaped drums finished in a bright brass glaze, resting in a finely crafted wooden table. The drums are of equal size but have different thickness heads, allowing for varying timbres. A wooden foot pedal is attached to each drum with a dowel linkage, allowing each drum tuning to be changed while playing. Finally, mounted between the drums is a hand-carved cherry wood woodblock. To get a variety of sounds, the Nakers set comes with a pair of bamboo brushes and a pair of piano hammer mallets.
Give everything but up.
