Topic: Working on a Holiday

A long time ago I helped out a friend delivering papers. I got car sick with all the driving around and swore I would never do it again. Even knowing what a pain-in-the-butt job it is I still find myself sometimes complaining about my paper being a little damp or not thrown in the right spot. So this song is dedicated to those unsung heroes, the newspaper delivery men and women. I hope you like it and I hope you are generous with delivery person this year too.

Working on a Holiday By Jeff Gilpin

December 3rd, 2007

Intro

[F] [C] [A]

Verse 1

[D7]Holiday’s coming

Can’t wait till it’s here

But there’s someone who works

Every day of the year

[G]They can’t take a break

Because every day they’re on the [D7]clock

So the [A]holiday you’re sleeping in

You can [F]bet your bottom [C]dollar they are [D7]not

Chorus

The [G]job of newspaper delivery

[A]Most certainly is [G]not the job for [D7]me

So [G]come on everyone let’s give them a hand

For your [F]delivery lady or [C]perhaps you’re your delivery [D7]man [A]

Verse 2

They [D7]get the job done

The majority of the time

But just screw it up once

It’s like they committed a crime

[G]Customer calls a screaming

Totally out of their [D7]mind

Their [A]paper got wet

Or [F]worse they didn’t [C]get it on [D7]time

Chorus

The [G]job of newspaper delivery

[A]Most certainly is [G]not the job for [D7]me

So [G]come on everyone let’s give them a hand

For your [F]delivery lady or [C]perhaps you’re your delivery [D7]man [A]

Verse 3

[D7]Here it is now

The season of giving

So let’s all remember

It’s what they do for a living

Dig [G]deep into your pockets

And show them how much you [D7]care

On those [A]days you’re sleeping in

They’ll [F]still be [C]getting your paper [D7]there [A]

Chorus

The [G]job of newspaper delive[D7]ry

[A]Most certainly is [G]not the job for [D7]me

So [G]come on everyone let’s give them a [D7]hand

For your [F]delivery lady or [C]perhaps you’re your delivery [D7]man [A]

Ending Chorus

It’s a [G]job but it’s also a sacri[D7]fice

So [A]this year you [G]shouldn’t have to think [D7]twice

The [G]best thank you your deliverer’s ever [D7]seen

Is more [F]newspapers being read and a little [C]card with a whole lot of [A]green[D7]

Re: Working on a Holiday

Hi Jeff,

Nice song, but your papers delivery people get it easy, riding by and throwing it on the lawn. In the UK it is delivered to the door and put in, or through the letterbox (great fun when there is a dog in the house that likes to grab the paper).

I should know my father had a village newsagent and from the age of 15 to 19 I delivered them come rain, hail, snow or storm. If my memory serves me correct the only days there were no paper were Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.

Thank you,

Roger
