Topic: Song editing question

When I edit songs (change a chord and save, for example), it seems to take out all of the "white space" from the song.  In other words, it removes all of the blank lines from my songs and collapses all of the lines together.

Is there any way to add blank lines to improve the readability of the songs?  I didn't see anything in the help that worked for this.

Thanks!

Re: Song editing question

Try this:

Whenever you want some space (like between verses), simply use the 'comment' command and insert some dots or dashes:

Verse 1

{c: . . . .}

Verse 2

"That darn Pythagorean Comma thing keeps messing me up!"

Re: Song editing question

Could you give me one song where you clearly see this happening. Also indicate where you want the space to be.

Re: Song editing question

Here are some examples - go to the songbook "In 3" Waltz Gems.

To get there, go to 'All Public Songbooks' (and change to alphabetical listing).  Because the songbook name starts with quotes, it is the very last book in the alphabatized listings.

Within the "In 3" songbook, look at "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", or "Amazing Grace", or "Scarborough Fair".

I edited these selections in such a way that the verses are separated by some dots.  I prefer this method of separating verses rather than a comment that says "Verse 2" - - the words would just be visual clutter, but the dots serve the intended purpose and are not distracting.

To see the actual editing commands, simply move a selected song into your personal songbook.  Then, go to your songbook and click on the 'Edit' button next to the song.

The upper window will show the raw or text file.  The lower window will show the song in formatted style.  Use the 'update' and 'save' buttons to help hone your song's layout.

Another useful tip - - - when adding chords to verses, I have found the process is hastened by first going through the lyric and typing-in each pair of brackets where they need to be positioned.  Then, it is very easy to go back and type in the chords inside the brackets.

Re: Song editing question

Sorry I hadn't responded sooner.

Just today, I edited the copy of Brown Eyed Girl that is in My Songbook.  Before I edited it, there was a blank line between the verses.

The only change that I made was to change the 1st chord of the chorus from [D] to [D7].  I just added the 7 to that chord.  Now, all of the blank lines are gone when you view it in formatted mode.

I hope that helps.

Re: Song editing question

Question for admin:  Was the information that I posted on 6/16 helpful in troubleshooting the blank spacing issue?

Re: Song editing question

I have to admit I have not looked at it yet. July was very busy, and right now I am on vacation.

Ill be back in a week, and will fix a lot of bugs...<img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: Song editing question

No problem.  I've been in and out as well.  I just wanted to check back in!

Re: Song editing question

Another editing question but a different theme.

Prior to saving a song to my songbook I changed the key ( by -1 semitone in this case). When I tried to edit the saved song from my song book the edit function took me to the original song i.e. the one without the key change. Is this correct or am I doing something wrong <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_razz.gif" border=0 alt="Razz">

Re: Song editing question

I understand what you mean. I can change that if a lot of people claim this is not logical.

The transpose-feature is independent of the editing function. You will edit the source, but the "-1 transpose" will always be there in the songbook. I could of course let you edit the transposed song, but then I would have to remove the setting that says this song is "-1 transpose" as well.

I am not sure what is best here.

Re: Song editing question

The "disappearing white space"-problem is now fixed.

I am sorry this took so long time.

Enjoy the white space.

A few songbook-edit related questions to you all: Do anyone feel the need to edit songs without adding them to the songbook? Like fixing a couple of errors before printing a song. Should it be possible to enter new songs (from private archives) into the songbook?

If there is such needs, Ill implement it. If not, I will use my time squeezing small, irritating bugs... <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_razz.gif" border=0 alt="Razz">

Re: Song editing question

I'll check it out.  Thanks!!!

Re: Song editing question

I am also/still having problems with disappearing white space when i edit charts in my songbook.

Everything squishes together and it is hard to read.

Can you please help me?

Am i doing something wrong?

Re: Song editing question

Being able to enter songs (from private archives) would be a great feature.  I have several songs worked out that are not indexed on Chordie - - it woule be great to be able to include them in a Chordie songbook.

Being able to edit songs without first moving them into a songbook would also be nice, but I see no problem with the current system.  To me, it makes sense to first move a selection into a songbook before editing.  I see no practical advantage to being able to edit songs outside of a songbook.

Re: Song editing question

maybe people want to edit it outside a songbook because they have no plans to keep it in a songbook?

I tihnk they should just save it in a songbook, do what they want then print it out then delete it if they want.

regarding the white space missing, I just read thru these old posts about them. I do what you do James, I use .. (dots) to seperate them.

it does seem strange why it does it, but it doesnt bother me that much really.

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Song editing question

Personally, I think if people want to edit a song they should add it to a songbook first and it can always be deleted if it doesn't need to be kept.

The idea of being able to add your own songs to a songbook is an excellent one and I think you should get on it straight away, so I won't keep you any longer  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">
