Topic: okay im confused...

Alright so when you put on a CAPO, you're moving the key up by one half step each fret, this I know. Okay so why is it that when i play the heartbreak hotel solo on the twelfth fret that it sounds exactly the same no matter where the capo is at and i don't move my fingers????
Shouldn't the note be a half step lower if i take the capo off the first fret and play open?

Re: okay im confused...

Because the capo is going to change the key of the instrument, but if you fret E on 12, it's still E.   So you have to change where you're soloing at accordingly.

If you've got the cappo at the 3rd fret (G), you'll need to start that solo at the 14th fret if you want to keep the same solo intervals, or find another spot to start at G.    You might try finding the relative minor of the key your in (or major if you're in a minor key already) and solo there, too.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: okay im confused...

yay, i get to share something new i learned haha. The note you hear when you pluck a string is a result of the string being a certain length. pressing the string against a fret, in a sense makes the string shorter, giving it a higher pitched sound. When you put a capo on and put your finger , say on the 12th fret, the string is just as long as when you put your finger on the 12th fret without the capo. i hope that made sense. kind of sad... but i just learned this in math class... go figure.
