If you want to play Irish traditional stuff you would be better tuning it to GDAE

yes you can use a guitar tuner.
also, there are different ways top tune the mandolin but the GDAE is i tihnk the most popular way to tune, and as said it makes an easy way of playing irish/scottish folk tunes and probably more. I learned guns and roses " civil war " with this tuning.

you can use a guitar tuner...IF AND ONLY IF it just shows the name of the notes. OK, the names of the strings:: with the mandolin facing you, the top (thickest diameter) is G; next, D; next, A (hardest to tune, don't ask why); bottom (narrowest diameter), E

(oh, yeah: to make songs sound best make sure tuner is set to 440)
