Topic: Song difficulty

This is a digest of several posts/suggestions I've got lately:

There should be possible to only browse certain songs (easy songs, songs with chord grids, tablatures etc).

The first step to implement this, would be to categorise the songs. I will start with adding a label to these pages:

<a href="http&#58;&#47;&#47;www.chordie.com/allsongsartists.php/songtitle/Blowing+in+the+Wind/songartist/Dylan%2C%2BBob/index.html" target="_blank"> http://www.chordie.com/allsongsartists. … le/Blowing +in+the+Wind/songartist/Dylan%2C%2BBob/index.html</a>

The label could be "difficulty:easy/medium/advanced/tablature"

It is impossible to determine how hard a tablature is to play, but I can do it on chords.

I need feedback on these two subjects:

* Any suggestions for icons/images to illustrate difficulty?

* What is an easy/medium/advanced song? What chords? Should I make other categories? Very easy (only G,D,C,A)

After this, I could make it possible to filter the songs out all together (like setting that you only will view tabs, or only easy chord songs). But one step at the time...

Re: Song difficulty

As a fairly novice guitarist I would very much appreciate this feature.

However what I would like better, is the ability to filter out songs that appear in text-only, without the transposable chords feature.

Re: Song difficulty

Is the search by difficulty feature in progress or is it forgotten?

Re: Song difficulty

My suggestion would be:

For the difficulty icons you could have smilies, smile for easy, neutral for medium, and sad for hard and say cool for tabs.

G, D, C, A, E, Em, Am  for easy.

All other major and minor chords for medium.

Sus, dim and aug chords for difficult.

Re: Song difficulty

Rating by chords is an inefective measure.   Minor 11 chords may look scary on paper, but are easy all the way down the neck.  You can play Emin11 with one finger.   Same with Cmaj7.  Two fingers.   Lots of those jazz chords are easier to play than a straight G at the nut.

I'd like to see a rating system that takes into consideration the level of the rater (I'm a newb, and I think this song is hard.  I'm an experienced player, and I think this song is easy, etc...) rather than trying to make an objective rating on something that simply has no objective measure.

Someday we'll win this thing...

I agree, also some songs can have very simple chords but a fast and complex picking pattern.

Re: Song difficulty

It might be time to look at this again. It is very easy to alter the number of chords that are considered easy. It is however vey difficult (read: impossible) to base the rating on more qualitative measures (like fast picking pattern).
