Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR MAY 2025 - FOLK

I was trying to think of some of my favorite folk artists and songs.   Honestly, the list is way too big.  So, to name just a few of them (and believe me there are lots I like), I thought of Cat Stephens, Gordon Lightfoot, Simon & Garfunkel, Neil Young (not all like his music I know), there are some awesome Irish Folk Songs too by different artists.  The Corrs are an Irish group, who do Folk-pop stuff that I like as well.

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR MAY 2025 - FOLK

In my 20s a friend invited me to watch a touring folk group at our local YMCA. As he was a super guitarist he was their supporting act which is why I went. The stand out song he played was Bob Dylans tambourine man. The folk group came on later and their stand out was the song about a thresher which was quite dirty probably why I liked it! Also about 10 years ago I played an evening gig at a pub in Pembroke the afternoon act was a folk group, which I enjoyed but would never pull me back from the dark side of rock music.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR MAY 2025 - FOLK

I've always been curious about what defines a "folk" song as opposed to a "pop song on acoustic guitar" - and it appears that it's generally an old

The term, Folk Song, originally meant songs that were so old that no one remembered who wrote them. It was pretty clear cut.

However time has transmorgified the meaning, and it's now generally refers to an artist on an acoustic guitar, although when I went to the Wikipedia page on it, there was a whole different definition, including differing countries traditional and folk songs:

So, after that research ... I still don't know smile

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR MAY 2025 - FOLK

There seem to be a  lot of folk groups in NZ nowadays.
The ones ive seen are acoustic playing trad folk or folk rock, leaning toward bluegrass and amerciana or celtic
a real good mix of styles, but they seem to to generally call themselves folk
