Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

I was listening to some John Lee Hooker music and this one, Boom Boom Boom according to Wikipedia came up saying it was Pop whereas I have always thought it was Blues.  What does everyone think?  I loved this song in the Movie Blues Brothers, a great movie.

My kids are always telling me information on Wikipedia is skewed, but I always say it's crowd sourced and vetted, so it should be correct - but here I would agree with you, I'd consider it Blues and not Pop, so perhaps Wikipedia is not the "source of truth" I thought it was.

But yes, great song in a great movie!! I still have the VHS cassette of it from when my old video player remote was still connected via a wire ... !! I watched it again about 1 or 2 years ago, still a great movie (unlike the sequel).

Cheers

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

Boom, Boom, Boom was a definate blues song. Obviously a lot of people on Wikipedia think pop but they're wrong! Also agree with Richard the Blues brothers was a great film in the same sense with Blazing Sadles.
Well done Jan, adding comments as well as songs is a great idea.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Blues  has  been my  go  to   genre   since  I  was  a  teenager  ,although I  did    rolling stones covers  from 8  yr  old . My  favourite     blues song  is    Killing  floor by  Howling  wolf   but my  intrest  was  awakened  when a  friend    introduced  me  to  the  music  of  Leadbelly . we  would  spend  hours   trying  to  play  thes  songs  mostly  in our   own styles  .However   if  some  one  asks  me  to  play  a  blues  song   I  will  usualy   play   Rock me  baby  as  It  was  always  an audience  favourite    back  when I  was  with  GB  Blues

Glad to hear others think Boom Boom Boom is Blues too and not Pop.

Phill, I can't take the credit for the discussion or adding comments, that was neophyttes idea.  Hopefully it will make it more interesting for everyone and it's great to have discussion, comments and everyone putting their views, thoughts down.  I am sure I for one will learn some new things from this.  Also, Phill, I agree, Blazing Saddles was an excellent movie, I think we still have a video copy of it somewhere.  I watched that movie so many times lol

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

Grah1 that was a good performance by you and the band.  Looks like you were all enjoying it and having fun.  A few years ago, now by the looks, 11 years to be exact.  Do you guys still play together?

Here is a link to Howling Wolf`s Killing Floor that you mentioned.  A good Blues one, but you know I never really knew what it was about, so I googled it.   This what Wikipedia said the songs about.
Quote:  Howlin' Wolf recorded "Killing Floor" in Chicago in August 1964, which Chess Records released as a single.[2] According to blues guitarist and longtime Wolf associate Hubert Sumlin, the song uses the killing floor – the area of a slaughterhouse where animals are killed – as a metaphor or allegory for male-female relationships: "Down on the killing floor – that means a woman has you down, she went out of her way to try to kill you. She at the peak of doing it, and you got away now ... You know people have wished they was dead – you been treated so bad that sometimes you just say, 'Oh Lord have mercy.' You’d rather be six feet in the ground."[3]

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

I'd consider anything done by Clapton to be blues ... so Alberta, Alberta .. and Layla, etc ...

I think you'd be surprised at the ones you already know ... anything based around this pattern:

https://forum.bassbuzz.com/uploads/db6384/original/2X/8/8860053b6528ca2617543ef308602d8eae3661a5.jpeg

is a blues song, (where I=G, IV=C and V=D ... or I=A, IV=D and V=E would be blues in G or A respectively) and sometimes it's more the feeling of the song, like some of Bob Dylans songs sound bluesy because of his voice.

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

Good chart there neophytte.

easybeat, I will be closing this one tomorrow and starting next months 'Suggestions and Discussion'
so, if you want to suggest one category you would like to go up, let me know before tomorrow.  That is which genre you would like, e.g. folk, rock ....

So, the songs so far mentioned in this thread, I will be putting up tomorrow for next months FSOTM.  So any last minute suggestions?

Re: UPCOMING TOPIC, DISCUSSION & SUGGESTIONS FOR APRIL – BLUES

easybeat, yep feel free to put up back stories to a song you like in the Suggestions and Discussion each month.  I was really meaning, pick a genre.  Aiming to put up a different genre each month for a while and see how it goes.
