At first, I thought it was the Huka falls but then I realized it was about a dam being built for the people and basically things had to die for the dam to be built.  At first, I thought the Clyde dame.  Kinda made me sad actually because that is what happens, sometimes something else has to die or give way to some new.  Using the fantail and wood pigeon in amongst the native bush by the newly to be built dam made its point visually as well as the lyrics.  However, as the song proceeded, I realized I was wrong and it was Manipouri dam, power station, which I have been to Manipouri but never to the power station.  I remember this song, but I never took the time to understand what it was about, or who the artist was until watching the video you posted.  Thanks for sharing Brian.  I have no idea who commissioned it, but it sounds like either the Greenies of some type of similar group OR the power station itself but I dont think so.

Dams were also created in Wales to serve English cities like Birmingham (not Alabama) regardless of the fact that villages had to be evacuated and the populace rehoused, as in the film How green was my valley.
I think the video and song refers to yin/yang the good created in a bad way, no good deed goes unpunished even though it's the victims that get punished not the fat cats that get fatter.
As for your first question, I actually thought of a ferry but decided to go for a cruise ship.
To be honest I know very little about New Zealand apart from Brian, Pete and Jan live there, oh and it's summer time!
