Hello all, just wondering if there is any mandolin players out there? <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">
ive fooled around with a few at music stores
i dont think id ever be very good at it though cus i have large hands
I have a couple of bouzoukis. It is possible to tune them on a par with four guitar strings and it works well- (although in reality the Greek bouzouki is tuned three tones lower on each string) and the longer fingerboard is easier for guitarists to adapt to. As a guitarist, I found it relatively straightforward and was able to create something close to a tune almost immediately. Larger and more interesting than a mandolin, it is probably a more useful choice for guitarists.
large hands is not an excuse. i have the same but i am loving learning the mandolin. I have just got myself an old hickory mandolin and i can`t put it down its a wonderful instrument just need some tuition if there`s anyone out there that will oblige <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">
not the same instrument <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_cry.gif" border=0 alt="Crying or Very Sad">
My father in law has just gave my son a mandolin to mess about with.
I was playing it for hours today. I went to a site and got chords for the mandolin, and so far I am enjoying it. I am not playing single notes, just chords but still sounds good.
I am finding all the chords easy to do apart from F, so I am cheating with that chord.
I have big chinky fingers , no, not fat , just chunky and I am finding chords easy.
the site i went to was gootar.com it has chords for uke, madolin and kore instruments
Ken
sounds goo to me i`ll have to give that site a try thanks
it is quite good, but then after I posted that reply I remembered that CHORDIE has mandolin chords too, lol.
if you click on a song then go to the right hand side of the screeen and change from guitar to mandolin.
I've played mandolin for about 8 years. Here is a decent site to check out. I suggest learning how to read tablature.
<a href="http://www.mandolincafe.com/tabarc.html" target="_blank">http://www.mandolincafe.com/tabarc.html</a>
I may be able to answer some basic questions if there is anything that I can help with. I will check back occasionally.
good luck!

hey i play mandolin
I've been playing Mandolin for about 4 mounths no and I love it. I find it much easyer to play than my guitar.
But I wish there were more contemory song to play. I did find a song book for the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Which has some old song that are relitively easy to play.
If any one knows of any other songs please send a link.

Ken
Thanks Ken.
If I can find the time I'll try and submit some of the TABs for O Brother, Where art thou?
Is any one interested.
Hello all,
I'm Soupy1957 from Connecticut, a guitar player for fourty years, and a mandolin player for seven months.
I owned and sold a KM620B (not a bad "first" mando, just wanted to help pay for the next one), and currently own a MK Dragonfly Limited Edition, and an Epi MM-50.
You'll probably see me posting here, there and everywhere, but you won't see me pretending to know what I'm talking about if I don't. (A refreshing thought, eh?!)
Fair is fair; shoot questions at me, and if I can, I'll answer them. If I can't, I won't snow ya. Meanwhile, I'll offer thoughts, and ask questions of my own.
Best Regards,
Soupy1957

Hey there
Luckily I'm into the Dixie Chicks and they have a heap of Mandolin parts - it's just a matter of me having the patience to read the tab!
I agree that there isn't a heck of a lot of 'new' stuiff around for the mandolin. I suggest using the chordie feature of changing the tuning (and chord shapes) and having a bash at some of the tracks that you may have added to your personal songbook. It's a great party trick to pull out some Velvet Revolver or some classic Beatles for the next singalong.
Next up is Tool on my Mandolin mission! hmm, I wonder how some Violent Femmes songs would sound... <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">
Thanks tracelaw I did try that but didn't like the sound, would much prefer to pick the notes than to play the cords.
Just have to keep looking.
me, i play lots of traditional, metal, rock, industrial (mainly nine inch nails), and blues one mine. i also play violin and a few other instruments, i only mention violin because it is like mandolin a lot.
I have got about 6 months in with my MK mandolin and I really dig it!
I've had one for about 3 weeks now. It reminds me of Western North Carolina and growing up when I was a kid. I can not believe what Chris Thile (Nickel Creek) can do with it. I just bought the "Reasons Why" CD and their song "When in Rome" just rocks out.
me i play a Fender acoustic-electric A-style, F-hole
<font color="darkblue"></font><i></i> ... I FIRST FELL IN LOVE W/ A GOURD-BACKED MANDOLIN, WHICH, UNFORTUNATELY, WAS KEPT AS A MANTEL-PIECE FOR BEAUTY. ULTIMATELY, I ACQUIRED AN AUSTIN FLAT-BACKED FOR $ 300. I LOVE IT, BUT ONLY RECENTLY DECIDED TO GET SERIOUS W/ IT. AS STARTERS, re: LESSONS ... "MANDOLIN PRIMER FOR BEGINNERS" by BERT CASEY, w/ CD & DVD , AVAILABLE PER GOOGLE.com. I DOWNLOADED CHORDS FOR MY MANDOLIN, VIA GOOTAR.com. AND THERE ARE SONGS TO PLAY, FINDABLE PER THE SEARCH ENGINE @ THIS WEBSITE. ... I ALSO HAVE AN ELECTRIC GUITAR. I FIGURED : IF I'M EVER IN A SITUATION WHERE I DO NOT HAVE ELECTRICITY TO POWER MY ELECTR.G.'s AMPLIFIER, I'D WANT AN ALTERNATE INSTRUMENT TO PLAY, FOR MY OWN PLEASURE & TO ENTERTAIN OTHERS. SO, @ THE PRESENT TIME, I AM STUDYING TWO INSTRUMENTS @ ONCE. OH ! AND ALSO : THERE IS A LEARN-HOW-TO-PLAY BLUEGRASS MUSIC FOR A VARIETY OF STRINGS, @ << THE BLUEGRASS COLLEGE .com >>, FOR $9/MO. (I ALWAYS HAVE THOUGHT OF A MANDOLIN AS AN IDEAL BLUEGRASS PLAYING INSTRUMENT !) KEEP IN TOUCH w/ YOUR STRINGS ! sig.: "DANI".
Hi i have just taken up mando, after buying a 1920,s Banjo-Mandolin as a wall ornament last year my son bought me a cheap teardrop, I got hooked and now own a not so cheap curly top doodad...which I electrified myself.........got my first gig at the end of this month with a country band........not bad for a fifty year old who only played penny whistles before !!! good thing about an electrified mando ....you can turn the volume down when forget the bloody chords!
Hello biggles55 and welcome to the chordie forum!
Penny whistle is a marvelous instrument. My son recieved one for Christmas. His interest soon cooled, but I have been trying it out and love the sound. Although I have not dived in fully yet and made the decision to 'get good' at it, I think that commitment will eventually be made.
Since I also play bassoon and read music, the learning curve will not be so steep for me (I hope) when I do take the dive. The fact that you are already 'musical' from playing the whistle probably accelerated your learning on the mandolin.
Hope your first gig is a big success! James
Thanx for the support Mr Moderator ......but alas the gig fell through........bugger it! Still ,,,more time to practise the dreaded F chord
