I liked it Zurf, you performed it really well.  I liked it with the talking and blues style,  very effective, you had the right type of voice for it as well.  I think TIGLJK will be very pleased with your attempt as his song.  Great song Jim smile

Zurf

Thanks my friend !  That was really cool.  I liked it a lot though it is way different that what my version is.
(Mostly because you are actually a musician and I have basically no musical ability smile )

Thanks Jan - I wrote it a while ago, but this weekend, my best friends son (who is the lead guitarist for Maddy & Tae) stayed with us and he was telling me that when the played on Prince Edward Island the night before he managed to get some free time - and went in the North Atlantic for a swim - he told me it was really cold.   It inspired me to make a few changes to the lyrics. smile

Thanks again Zurf - loved it.

Isn't that cool? You heard  it totally differently.  I hope a competent bluesman (or woman) (or someone who isn't sure one way or another) can take it on as a project and give us a third wholly different approach.

Struggling with my voice at the moment again and I've a couple of solo gigs coming up this month so I'm not singing  with the band at the moment. Hopefully it will settle but since getting covid in March I've had a recurring problem but I'll send how I feel after this week ends session

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

I've enjoyed listening to everyone's entries this month. Here is my entry for Chordie July song of the month with the word rain in it on the third line in.

                           Southern Pacific City.

Just looked at my TV and the people of the countries in the Northern Hemisphere.

Are saying it is far to hot up there.

Well I’m sitting here and it’s winter and the RAIN beating on my windowpane.

And I can feel the cold in my knees.

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

Peatle, thoroughly enjoyed that, you nailed it.  The video footage you showed exactly how its been here.   The rain has been unbelievable this year! Non stop and as I am writing the rain has started yet again.  I have had it enough of it but like you said in the your song depicting the weather down under, I do enjoy being snug as a bug in my house with warm heaters and a nice cosy feel about the place.  Makes me thankful that I am cosy and comfortable.  Peatle its wonderful to see you back participating on here smile

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

Cheers Jan thank you for letting me have a shot at FSOM. I am not up to much playing music as it gets painful for me to play piano and guitar Ive more of less had to give it away. Just playing simple open chords on the guitar like G C D are a struggle for me at the moment. Fortunately I have other things that keep me busy and happy.

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

I'm stretching a bit of artistic liberty here, the first time I heard this song was with a story where an old couple are the subject matter, and one is quite ill, and this song is a bit of a "goodbye" song, although it doesn't say the word itself: https://youtu.be/KarwZFku3lo

And it says "loved", instead of "love", as past tense.

Cheers

Good one Richard and also a good  applause response from your audience on your video.

Thanks for having a listen; was only about 15 or so in the audience that night, but they apparently love when I do fingerpicking songs smile

Also, here is "Riders on the Storm", played with my son (who heard the song for the first time in the morning), which mentions the word "love" (gotta love your man): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpt7HRc15rg

Nice tune, I'm curious how and where you recorded this one, do you have any info about the album??

LOL @ murdering a banjo; you wouldn't be the first, and probably won't be the last. It's not a bad tune, vocals need to come up a bit (banjo's are loud!!), it felt kinda short, to be honest, and I don't think it was as bad as you made it out to be ...

It's interesting when we hear a cover of a song and that's the sound we associate with the song - but you did it really well, really enjoyed the fingerpicking, but wish you were sitting back a bit from your recording device (phone?) so we could see your guitar in the visuals; and also if it was a bit higher, either looking at you, or slightly down towards you. I always find videos harder to do than straight audio as you have to consider the visual elements.

I haven't heard this song before, it sounds quite good, but I hear what you say about it's better for the guitar picking pattern, but doesn't quit suit your voice - have you tried it with a capo to bring your vocals into the subdominant 3rd, (maybe using 2nd fret) or the dominant 5th?

Jandle wrote:

Here is my version of it done 5 years ago and sung probably way too fast smile  https://soundcloud.com/ukulelejan/10010135a

Is this a song you've put up before? I'm sure I've heard it, but i might just have been looking through your soundcloud songs at some stage. Yes, the tempo goes up and down, but the rest of the recording sounds pretty good.

Here is one attempt at a song with the word CHILD in it.   I did mess up at the end but didn't change it as still getting over a cold/flu bug, so coughing
and my voice was getting a bit scratchy.    I hope I get to do another song this month, but  will see how I go with this throat.

I couldn't hear any problems with your voice, apart from when you tried to reach those high notes, could hear a bit of "Bonnie Raitt" rasp in there, but if you hadn't have mentioned it, I wouldn't be able to tell. But the recording was a bit on the distorted side. It was also strange hearing a NZ accent in the talking part, because I'm not used to it ...

When I did a song writers workshop a while ago, they were talking about the psychological impact of declaring your song bad before you've even started it, and I've become concious that I do that on occasion, I try now not to say anything along those lines (and it's hard sometimes!!) because it affects both yourself and the audience listening ... the song strolled along quite well although there were a couple of fumbles in there ...

TIGLJK wrote:

I heard some early Dylan in this recording, at first I thought I liked it better than Zurf's version, then I changed my mind, by the end I wasn't sure which I liked better, but it's a pretty good song overall.

Richard thank you for your feedback on my videos. I like the way you covered Jim's song also.     I also enjoy  reading your well thought out comments on all things chordie.

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

Thanks Neophytte for the comments on my songs.  Yes the first one was one I played a few years ago now, I was showing re-showing it as it was one Zurf had done too.  The 2nd song agree with your comments.

Neo I enjoyed your 2 songs, particularly the one with your son who played along side of you on piano, it sounded great having him accompany you.  Nicely done and performed well.

Re: JULY 2022 FSOTM – DOOR, CHILD, GOODBYE, RAIN, LOVE

Thanks for the constructive criticisms Richard. Very useful on every point.

As to the video, I use the phone because it's quick and simple and getting my office converted over to a studio set-up generally would take too long and I just wouldn't participate. But I'll see what I can do on the phone placement. I am worried that if it's too far back that the sound won't carry well. I don't think my phone does wide angle for videos, but I can double check.
