Topic: My tip to my son
Talking with my youngest, Cory, tonight as I was strumming. I asked him if he had written anything for the riff we came up with besides the title?
He said he was having a hard time starting. I told him, the best advise is from Hollwood.
One of my favorite movies and I have quoted it here before.
"No thinking - that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to write, not to think!"
However I only used the last sentance "The first key to writing is... to write"
I reminded him I have been writing since I was 13, and not everything is good, but unless you write you dont learn. I told him not to worry about anything but getting his ideas on paper. No matter if they rhyme or not, anything that hits him. After that we can worry about ABAB, AABB, ABC or however he wants it to flow.
I think this has really made him think about all the times he would tell me "Dad, all your patterns are the same"
I told him I know what works for me, you find what works for you. ya gotta just write. AND WRITE WHAT YOU FEEL.
