Topic: Corona Virus Blues

Due to the attempt to mitigate the quick spread of the COVID-19 virus here in the US, each state government has issued restrictions and made suggestions involving public gatherings.  In Ohio our universities have resorted to on-line classes only, grade schools and high schools are on extended 3-week spring breaks, casinos have been closed and sporting events cancelled. Any event that would involve more than 100 people has been cancelled.

I've received word that the Monday night gospel/bluegrass jam session I attend each week has been suspended as it is mostly attended by elderly folks who are the group most affected by the virus. Also the weekly open mic venues and the Saturday morning jam sessions at the local music store  I attend each week may be cancelled for a period of time.

The restrictions will have an impact on my weekly social activities but I'm thankful that I live out in the country and have access to fairly isolated hiking trails and streams to fish and paddle, plus I have my guitars to play.

Has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your daily life yet?

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Good to hear from you DE. I sent you a few texts and didn't hear back. Then I sent an email and it came back as undeliverable. Was getting worried about you.

As for me, I was supposed to go to Florida, but that was cancelled. Then my kid's school was cancelled, but some of her teachers are still giving assignments and study guides. Then my wife's business has been floundering with a battle of just who's in charge, so she's been alternately been getting told to work from home and go to the office. Then my eldest daughter's campus closed with students told to vacate dorms. They will have on-line courses for three weeks. That inserted an unexpected trip to get campus to pick her up.

So I've been working to make sure we have enough work zones, monitors, bandwidth, paper, ink, etc for us to operate four people as school/office. During this I picked up a 1/4" lag screw in my truck tire. I got to the mechanics' and had the opportunity for an unexpected but nevertheless welcome walk home.  We have food, tp, and meds enough for now. No way it'll all last because every time we thought we had a plan the plans changed. But only my wife is at-risk, so we can manage that if I need to run out. I'll shower and change when I return and keep her safe.

The church band is going to prerecord our songs and stream that next Sunday. They did it today, but I wasn't on schedule because I was supposed to be in Florida.

On an unrelated issue, a friend's mother passed on. She was a dear Godly woman who will be well missed by her family, but it was nice to see them again. It turned out she was living less than two miles from my house, but I didn't know it. Her husband likes to fish, so I'll try to take him out to our Izaak Walton chapter grounds to have a spot where he can sit on a bench in the shade and have a solid chance at a 10# bass when his grief allows him.

Also I've been in an insomnia cycle and am operating for the fourth day on less sleep than most get for one day.

So, in preparation I've been running errands, cleaning, driving, organizing, planning, failing to sleep and generally not having a restful vacation. I made plans for a bike ride today, but it's wet and cold and I'm in no mood to persevere through adversity in my entertainment pursuits today. I'm supposed to be off on Monday and Tuesday, but to heck with this. I'm going back to work.

On the plus side, I did buy a lawn tool I've been wanting, which is a leaf vacuum. It's everything I dreamed it would be.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

oh yeah
I was going to go to California through Chicago to visit my daughter. I cancelled - just saw a picture of the airport
There are 4-6 hour delays - shoulder to shoulder people.
This is crazy

I teach in central ( rural) New York and my school is closed, as is every one of them in central New  York. Most for 3 weeks - it is wreaking havoc.
Toilet paper - ( although I don't why) is gone from shelves in every store.
I am content to just stay at home - enjoy time with my family, and also play guitars.  I've got a couple of projects to do assuming Home depot doesn't close)
I really don't need to be around anyone
til this is over ! Even churches are closed.
Good health to all of you - let's get through this

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Good to hear you've got things under control Derek. Jen and I were leaving last Friday to visit our youngest and her family in Orlando but cancelled the trip. We also had plans to visit our oldest in Pensacola next month but have decided to delay that trip too. Our middle daughter has left the city and is staying with us until this blows over. My son called and said he has been working from home for the last week and will continue to do so until his employer thinks its safe for everyone to return. Our oldest grand daughter informed us that one of the employees at the facility she works at in Charleston SC (her boss) is exhibiting the symptoms and is currently being tested.

I've got home projects to work on too Jim, so hopefully the next few weeks won't be too boring. Although I'm in excellent health, I'm told that since I'm 70 I'm still in the at-risk group, so Jen and I plan to stay home and wait things out.  As you said, let's get through this.

I have the option of working from home, but I'm a manager in the facilities team. Though my particular duties are administrative in nature and I work from home two days a week on a regular basis, all the folks who are in the facilities doing daily support are on my team. It seems only right that I get in there, too. As a manager, one shouldn't ask someone to do something he isn't willing to do himself. If the higher ups implement one of our emergency response levels when the support staff is not required to be present, then I'll work from home.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Well I went out and got my 500 rolls of TP yesterday. big_smile

I haven't been very sociable the last few months so it's unlikely I'll get exposed to this bug. I'm one to keep a lot of supplies on hand all the time so no running to the store and dealing with the chaos. You'd think there is a blizzard in the forecast the way stuff is flying of the shelves. roll

The main reason I've been a recluse is that my dad got sick back in November and I started spending a lot of time up north with my folks. He passed on to the great woodworking shop in the sky at the end of January and I've basically been living with mom and helping her adjust to her new life up until a week ago. Unfortunately 3 months of not working has caught up to me financially so I'm home now, back to work and back online.

My one brother, a sister and a cousin played a song at the funeral and someone recorded it. Some of you will recognize me; 2nd from the right. On my left is the cousin and to my right, the sister and brother. I just barely got through it.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

All concerts have been cancelled because of the venues and to be honest that is not that not unexpected.  Before all this mess started my wife ordered a case of hand towels m and a case toilet paper and for groceries if you call Kroger they now have a store shopper and all you do is call and order and then ride up and they come out and even load your your car. Al you do is call them and give them a card  to  pay.

Our doctor's office called and wants all his patients to take their patents  to take their temperature each day. Other than that not that many changes except except grades 1 though 12 are out of school until further notice.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Joe, sorry to hear about your loss. Terrible news.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

You've done the right thing taking care of your Momma, Uncle Joe. Like others, condolences on the loss of your father.

Looks like my boss is going to be the one who goes in and works with the on-site crews in order to show them management isn't asking them to do what we aren't willing. I offered to assist, but he has asked me to stay home. This is going to be interesting.

As TIGJLK's post. We should try to do some live shares to jam where feasible. I'm going to have to figure out how to get the camera on my new laptop to work. It's off as a safety precaution, apparently, and I haven't figured out how to make it work so that I can use the good speakers and good mic.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Sorry for your loss Joe, but it was a beautiful tribute to your dad.

Here in Portugal Churches and meetings are closed, restaurants and coffee bars client numbers and opening times are restricted and stores are limiting the number of people allowed in, so it is rather chaotic.

On a lighter note, Per has come up with and idea so look out for a post from him and see what you think.

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Sorry for your loss, Joe, it was a good song that I could hear ...

In Perth, we are all instructed (as far as possible) to work from home, to limit exposure. Our company services a large supermarket chain (based in Sydney), and they're doing the same - unfortunately the digital networks and ISP's are slowing down as a result of everyone working from home. Store shelves are empty, un-imposed rations are being administered, every concert has been closed (after a lady went to the WASO concert in a contagious state). https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/public … 881483565z

Sporting events are to go ahead, but with no crowd in the stadiums, I'm guessing until one of the players is diagnosed with it, then they will probably shut down as well. Kids are still attending school, but every event and after school activity for the foreseeable future has been cancelled.

Strange times we're in ...

Cheers

Re: Corona Virus Blues

Sorry to hear of your loss Joe that was beautiful tribute to your father.  Down here at the bottom of the world carona virus has made its way here.  Because of our smaller population the numbers are not as high as other countries but growing. So travel and social gatherings have been hit plus all forms of industry like the rest if the world. To come to our country now you have to go into isolation for fourteen days on arrival. No one who isnt a citizen of our country have been now banned from entering our country as of the 20th March. I am retired so it has not been much of a change for me. Also the village where my 99 year old mother lives has stopped all group activities plus most visitors from outside. They have security and before going in if your allowed  entry you have  your hands santitised and your temperature taken and you have to fill out a questioneer and sign a declaration that all your answers are true. When I visited our local pub last time it was nearly empty when it is usually busy.  Here is a blues I found on the internet that I like by a young man. Stay well and stay safe everyone.
