PUTTING ON A NEW SCRATCH PLATE

hi there,

wondering if any one out there can help me?

i'm expecting a new scratchplate for my fender stratocasterany day now. when i fit it though, how do i know what distance the pickups should be from the strings?

or should i just simply measure beforehand?
