Topic: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

Hi all ...

I believe our Russell "The Alien Moderator" Harding has built one or two of these electric kits from Guitar Fetish over the years.

I'm looking quite seriously at trying one, and am wondering if others have experiences / advice to share:

1) are the fit of the wood components solid or approximate / sloppy?
2) are the wood qualities as good as the "as shown" pics on their website?
3) are the electronics good enough, or would you recommend planning for immediate upgrades?

Any firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated ... thanks!

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

I think it all depends on your skill level,  all the parts are there and I would use them if you are not satisfied you can always replace them. personally I upgraded the electronics  to Emerson pre-soldered kits with paper and oil capacitors and a zero nut is a good idea also I replaced my LP bridge with a roller type to improve string action less pinching then the V-shaped stock bridge good luck with the build and take your time with the finish and get it right.if possible have the guitar sprayed at an auto repair shop they usually are great at doing it right the first time.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

Thanks, Russell ... I certainly appreciate your "voice of experience". I recall you building "Fang" a few years ago, and it was stunningly beautiful. I'm a cabinet maker from days gone by so can work with wood; but the electronics stuff is a bit intimidating. The hardware I'm planning to put into this is as follows:

- Seymour-Duncan P-rail pickups w/ split shot (https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/p- … et-black-3)
- Stetsbar Pro II tremolo (https://stetsbar.com/stop.tail.html)
- Grover 106 locking tuners (https://www.grotro.com/Grover/2154a941- … 106-Series)

The look I'm aiming for is this Ibanez EGEN8 ... love the natural flamed Maple top, with black & gold hardware:

I'm going to use Varathane's "Diamond Coat" water-based urethane for finish. I built an oak stairway for a split entry over 10 years ago, and finished it with this. It was great to work with, held up amazingly, and didn't alter color towards an amber tone like a lot of finishes do ... been using it ever since with perfect results.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

I would be careful about selecting the Stetsbar tremolo mine is still sitting in the box and the reason is tuning issues there are other tremolos for about the same price that stay in tune.

Sorry to hear that, Russell ...

I put a Stetsbar on my EP Les Paul a couple of years ago, and once I put the Grover 106 locking tuners on it's been very stable. I've also been using the D'Addario NYXL strings, which were (they say) developed for players who bend a lot / use tremolos.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

I am glad it worked out for you and looking forward to seeing a few photos of your finished project perhaps even a video smile

I am actually looking to do one as well. The one I want is on back order so I have to wait.

Russell - haven't seen any videos of you and your  north land pals lately !  Are you guys still playing and making videos ?

Good luck

Some bad news on that endeavor our bass player started drinking whiskey and beer before we arrived at our scheduled 9:15 am rehearsals his playing went down the crapper and both the drummer and myself removed all our gear so he defriended me on Facebook and the drummer defriended him lol so the drummer called in another bass player and we start rehearsing the coming Wednesday at 9:15 am at his house so it all worked out for the better and I will be making some more videos of our jams smile

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

I found a Canadian source for DIY guitar kits, which was a necessity due to our dollar continuing to plummet compared to the USD ... on par just 4 years ago:

Cool thanks I will pass this link on to a friend who likes my Les Paul but is left handed he has his own work shop and loves projects.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

Russell .. you had mentioned other options to a Stetsbar Trem, so I did a bit of looking and found this new trem from Floyd Rose. It's a 100% surface mount that will retrofit a Gibson-style top without routing or drilling new holes, and looks as cool as all get out:

Here's a vid from Mr. Rose himself, explaining how it works, and how to install it:

My one preference would be to install locking tuners as opposed to his locking nut. Those things are a pain the pah-tootie for changing strings ... the Grover 106's are much simpler.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

you cant go wrong with a Floyd Rose it takes patience but the rewards are there

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

Thanks again, Russell ... you are always a wealth of helpful info. These things aren't cheap ($399 Canadian) so further thought is needed. Before I even get to that stage, I just need to focus on getting the guitar itself built.

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

That seems really cool!

or you could, for that price get a very nice Ibanez RG450DX.  The RG series is proven awesome! LOL  OR just get one of these from Guitar fetish  https://www.guitarfetish.com/XV-555-Dou … c_519.html  Xavier was rated very high in a guitar world  "LP copy" review.   I have played one or two at the music store.  That trem is floated and double locking.  ( Pretty much the original FR  design)

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

Thanks, Beamer ... always good suggestions.

That FRX trem IS pretty cool, isn't it? I like that it surface mounts, so there's no extra drilling / routing to fit it on the existing body.

I was originally considering the Guitar Fetish kit you mention, until I found the one from a Canadian source. Our federal government's reckless deficit spending over the last 3 years has dropped our dollar from being on par with the USD, to being only $0.75 in compared value. That makes for a huge price jump for us when ordering anything from the US to Canada. sad

Re: "Guitar Fetish" Electric Kits?

The last electric I built got a Bigsby running over a Shaller roller bridge.  That worked really well and was also surface mounted (& gold plated), with locking tuners there were no tuning issues.

Hang in there TF, with our current economic policies, in a few months you will be able to buy whatever you want for about $35 CDN...... and we'll be payin' something like $8,000 USD for a new Cell-phone.   big_smile
