Rush    "Dreamline"    Dallas, 2012

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhYuYxRlDRY

Now that they've confirmed their retirement, it was fitting that this week's entry is from Rush. The "Clockwork Angels" tour featured a string ensemble touring with them, and they certainly fill out the total sound. Even Alex steps to the mic for some background vocals.

This marks my 200th post of some of my favorite Prog Rock, both new and old. Although the genre will never reach the popularity of many others, I believe I can apply the slogan of a Nova-Scotia-made beer (Alexander Keith's Pale Ale): "Those who like it, like it a lot."

Stick Men    "Whale Watch"    Somewhere in the US, 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjGX3lio1C0

The Stick men released their first live CD in January 2014, compiled with footage from their tour of the album "Deep". The musicians are Tony Levin on Chapman Stick (King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, etc.), Pat Mastelotto on drums (King Crimson), and Germany's Markus Reuter (touch guitar). Musically and performance-wise, there really is nothing quite this that I know of. The live DVD is called "Power Play", and it is both soulful and powerful ... enjoy.

Gentle Giant    "Knots"    Brussels, 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI8dBOIuG9I

With an intricate vocal arrangement, and a stellar acoustic guitar duet (2:20 - 5:40) from Gary Green & Ray Shulman, "Knots" encompasses all of the harmonic complexity and virtuoso musicianship which GG are known and loved for. "Knots" is from the group's 4th studio album "Octopus", featuring artwork by Roger Dean, and showing a very sinister looking Cephalopod climbing out of the sea with obvious intent to do harm.

King Crimson    "Level Five"    Japan,  2003

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KKka6sSCs0

KC's 2003 double disk DVD "Eyes Wide Open" was compiled of tour footage throughout Japan. This song features intricate guitar duo work between Adran Belew and Robert Fripp, backed by the amazing drumming of Pat Mastelotto, and the touch guitar bass arrangements of Trey Gunn. It's a bit unique in that it has a "level five" intensity, but never really becomes a song as such. Nevertheless, the musicianship is exciting to watch / listen to.

Tangerine Dream    "Death of a Nightingale"    1994

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XgKOB2GPM8

Out the door early tomorrow, so I'm posting this beautiful piece of music tonight. Tangerine Dream's 1994 album "Turn of the Tides" features a lot of fantastic guitar work by Croatian guitarist Zlatko Perica. I haven't been able to find any live footage of him with the band during his short time with them. This vid features a lantern festival to open with, and some sky-diving footage to close. This was Perica's final album with TD, as the group went through a sonic change over the next few years. Austria's Iris Camaa joined them, replacing electronic percussion with mostly acoustic, and her fellow countryman Bernhard Beibl joined not long afterwards on guitar. I've been a stalwart fan of TD's music since first hearing "Atem" in 1973. The bad has changed and evolved, but have always been pioneers in this genre. Linda Spa's saxophone playing is the real feature of this song.

Mostly Autumn    "Heroes Never Die"    Cambridge, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W293upLR3V0

"HND" has become a staple of Mostly Autumn shows, since first being released in 1998 on their debut album "For All We Shared". The whole album reveals an exceptional maturity both musically and lyrically, especially for a group just starting out. It was even self-produced by singer / guitarist Bryan Josh. He's professed fan of David Gilmour's, and one can easily recognize a lot of similarities in style. Many wondered how the group would carry on following the departure of talented vocalist Heather Findlay in 2009, but Bryan's wife Olivia Sparnenn has met the challenge very capably, with her powerful voice and stage presence. I've been enjoying this group for well over 10 years, and hope you enjoy this selection.

Jethro Tull    "Song for Jeffrey"    BBC TV, 1968

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNvOlyf-JAw

Here's a real oddity, from a film produced by The Rolling Stones for a broadcast called "Rock & Roll Circus". To start off, we have a very young Mick Jagger introducing them. This is 3/4's of the original Tull lineup with, of course, Ian Anderson (vocals, flute), Glenn Cornick (bass) and Clive Bunker (drums). Guitarist Mick Abrahams had just left the band. During the brief interval before Martin Barre came aboard, we're seeing Tony Iommi here on guitar for his only "live" performance with Tull. Lots of interesting history here, and a really great song to wrap it up in.

Mystery    "Delusion Rain"    Veruno, Italy, 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81snjuqJlwI

The Veruno Prog Festival will be 10 years old this year, and is attracting a lot of the "newer" artists in the prog rock genre. I for one am glad prog didn't die with the great artists of the 70's (Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Pink Floyd, etc.) and that there are lots of talented groups carrying on in the background ... where prog has always lived.

Mystery are a Canadian Prog band (from our Francophone-majority province of Quebec) which was first started in 1986 by guitarist Michel St-Pere and keyboardist Sylvain Desharnais. With a few personnel changes along the way - like most groups - they are still comprised of an all Quebecois lineup from "La Belle Province". This is a new addition to PRW, and I hope you enjoy them.

Re: Prog Rock Wednesdays

Wow! It's a wonder they don't trip over all the wires! Were there two drummers or just two kits? That was one powerful singer and that guy with the long white beard sure did like to smile. Now for the BIG question: Is that an Alembic bass guitar? Sure looks like one in the shape, but the only one I have ever seen was fretless. I played this throughmy theater system and it sounded AWESOME!

Thanks, TF, Great choice!

Glad you enjoyed it, Bill ...
- looks like one drummer with two drum kits ... likely set up for different songs?
- the bass looks like an Alembic "Essence", but the head stock isn't right ... dunno what it is
- that opening synth section probably shook your place through your theater system

You piqued my curiosity Bill, so I did some looking around. The head stock is identical to an Ibanez SR Premium bass, but the knob configuration isn't. Ibanez's are always in a curve, but this one's are in a straight line. An older Ibanez model maybe?

Riverside    "The Curtain Falls"    Warsaw, 2008

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0K1_7QT_POg

Hailing from Poland, Riverside is another eastern European prog group which continues to make some incredible music. This clip is from their 2008 2-DVD release entitled "Reality Dream". The group was founded in 2001 by four friends, soon joined by bassist / singer Mariuz Duda. He brought the ability to sing in English to the group, which they knew was needed if they were capture attention outside of Poland's border.

Tragedy struck in 2016, when guitarist Piotr Grudzinski (seen in this video) passed away from a heart attack on Feb 21, at a very young age of 41. Piotr wasn't replaced for their next album (Eye of the Soundscape), but Riverside has since been joined by Quidam's guitarist Maciej Meller. I hope you enjoy this beautiful tack, and Piotr's smooth playing style.

Pink Floyd    "Time"    London, 1994

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_VjVqe3KJ0

Easily one of PF's most recognizable songs, with Gilmour's terrific guitar solo that we were all trying to learn back in the 70's. I couldn't find a live version where the solo is real close to the album's, but that's an artist's prerogative isn't it? I love watching Nick Mason playing the toms during the opening, and am reminded that even thought he's not one of these drummers with light-speed hands, he really is an asset to the whole Pink Floyd sound.

The song is about the circumstances of life which we'll often use as an excuse for inactivity, i.e., "sticking around a piece of ground in your home town". Time is the one non-renewable resource we have, and this song motivated me to get up out of my own hometown of 850 people, and get out and do something with my life. It's great to be proud of ones' roots, but they they don't have to root us to the ground of inaction.

TF that part of that  song Time you quote  motivated me to do a twenty one day Outward Bound course back in 1974. Hearing it live just now made me think of how the whole song  has played in my head regually when I want to motivate myself when taking on new challenges. Great choice thank you for putting it up this week.

Pendragon    "It's Only Me"    Katowice, Poland, 2008

Performance:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oObl_zAg3Ts

Lyrics: http://www.lyricsfreak.com/p/pendragon/ … 37522.html

Guitarist / vocalist Nick Barrett wrote this amazing ballad about feeling insignificant for wanting kindness in a cruel world, yet being able to rise above being fearfully immobilized by it. This is one of those songs that almost always prods a tear or two from me, which it did while listening again last evening. His playing is both soulful and skillful, as some of us have been discussing in a thread Phill began a couple of days ago. It's from their 2008 album "Pure", and I hope you enjoy and are encouraged by this today.

Quidam    "Different"    Katowice, Poland, 2008

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Shk5gRiRHJ4

Here's another track from Quidam's incredible 2008 Strong Together concert, filmed in Poland. "Different" is from their 2007 album "Alone Together", which is their 5th studio album. It doesn't have a weak song on it, and features some thought-provoking cover artwork, and the double-vinyl version features cool-looking white disks.  A good portion of the album's subject matter addresses the sadness of unrealized expectations, and the all-to-common disappointment with how disingenuous relationships can be. Their drummer (Maciek Wroblewski) and bassist (Mariusz Ziolkowski) really hold this one together, providing a beautiful backdrop to the guitar, horns, vocal, and keyboards.

Good eye, Jim! That's a PRS Guitar (Paul Reed Smith) and the "birds" are a signature feature on a lot of their guitars:

https://i1.wp.com/www.funkyfreeman.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/BirdStoryInlayExamples-25281200-2529b.jpg?resize=520%2C245&ssl=1

Now ... I'm wondering what kind of unique inlays a Kenyon Custom Guitar might eventually have (nudge, nudge / wink, wink). I've often thought the 9 planets of our solar system would look cool, since most guitars have 9 fret board markers.

Deep Purple    "Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming"    London, 2000

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49XBmLTwWsQ

One of the greatest concerts of all time, with all band members firing seamessly, and Ian Gillan in fine voice. This rendition features some amazing guitar playing by Steve Morse, who does roll offs with both his volume and tone knobs better than anyone I know of ... helps to have long fingers! smile His guitar is a custom rig built by Ernie Ball "Music Man", which features a 4-pickup configuration designed by Steve, as well as some on-board switching options which he uses very effectively. He prefers to do most of his guitar tones organically (i.e., at the source) instead of using lots of boxes or input from the house. This is a real jewel ... enjoy!
