Sorry to hear of your loss Jandle. I'm taking more time off work to address needs for my father, so I haven't been around much either. I'm glad I can help him, but I wish that everything weren't so urgent that I have to keep dropping everything and driving a couple hundred miles.

Wow Neo, you definitely need a `pickle` award or something for the person who enters the most songs!  You amaze me at how many you manage to cover, well done once again to you.  I thought your guitar work on Pinball Wizard and New York - New York was very good.   There was a couple of songs there I havent heard of before such as Rock n Roll and Going to California, so its great to hear new songs smile

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Jandal and Zurf I just want to say I wish there were more people like you who look out for the elderly. My family spend alot of time with my mother who is 97 but I can tell you around the world there are many elderly who are forgotten by their families.
Elder abuse is a global problem.  International studies report that 3% - 10% of older people experience abuse or neglect each year.  It happens to men and women of every religious, cultural, ethnic and income group. However, much abuse goes unreported.  It has been estimated that only 16% of all abuse incidents come to the attention of service agencies which can assist the older person to live safely.

What’s happening in New Zealand?
Each year, Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention (EANP) services receive more than 2000 referrals for older people who may be facing elder abuse or neglect.  That’s eight referrals every working day.  About three quarters of these situations are confirmed to involve elder abuse or neglect.

Often the abuse experienced by an older person involves more than one type of abuse.  In cases seen by Age Concern’s Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services over the last three years:
75% involved psychological abuse
over 50% involved financial abuse
15-20% involved physical abuse
10-15 % involved neglect
10-15% involved self-neglect
Abuse is also identified by other agencies including health providers, the Police, lawyers, other community support organisations, and other non-Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention services.

Age Concerns report that they are dealing with an increasing number of older people who have become the victims of scams.  Predators are deliberately targeting lonely older people who have assets, forming friendships with them through the internet or in person, then requesting money for various hypothetical emergencies.  In many cases, it is the family that contacts Age Concern for assistance.  But the older person is often prepared to incur their loss in exchange for the proffered friendship.
Almost half of abused older people are over the age of 80
One third of abused older people live alone
Three quarters of alleged abusers are family members; and we know this often continues even when the older person moves to residential care
Almost half of alleged abusers are adult children
Abusers are as likely to be female as male.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Well Peatle, without going into detail, I will have to disagree with you about the agencies. Based on experiences with my grandmother, uncle, and others, I'd say that keeping agencies away from the elderly is about the best thing a family could do for a loved one.

Zurf that was  what I was trying to say more people should take time for their elderly instead of leaving it to agencies.   Jandal and Zurf I just wanted  to say I wish there were more people like you who look out for the elderly without some sort other agenda. Old people can end up been put where they shouldn't be and don't want to me.. I have seen elderly who have been ripped of because there was no family there to protect them.

I feel for you - my Father-in-law was very ill for the last few years, and was bed-ridden for the last couple of years of his life, we flew back to Malaysia at short notice about 5 times in the year he passed away, which is a drained exercise to move two adults and two kids each time ... both emotionally and financially. It's never a fun time, so I really do empathize ...

Thanks smile I've still got a few others I recorded, but haven't put the video together yet ... this month has been a bit busy with loosing my job, the Mother-in-law visiting from overseas, etc ... which is why there was a load a t the end of the month, rather than evenly paced ...

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

It is February 31, and I have recorded Memphis In The Meantime.  It's a John Hiatt song, so it has awesome leads and solos in it. Well, John Hiatt's version does. My arrangement has none of that. Live from Dad's Sofa - it's Memphis In The Meantime!

Sorry Neo. I'm way, way behind on listening. I always enjoy your songs, but I have been very short on time. I will listen to all the ones you've taken the time to record and share with us. I appreciate that there's some guy 1/2 a world away willing to do that more than you know.

I do hope some others come out of their winter blues or whatever has been keeping the recordings down. I guess everyone's been having a pretty tough time lately.

I guess what I'm saying is that what some elder care agencies see as abuse and neglect, some elderly and their families see as independence and liberty. The world could do with a lot more patience and a lot less making decisions for others without knowing a darned thing about them.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Zurf  said I guess what I'm saying is that what some elder care agencies see as abuse and neglect, some elderly and their families see as independence and liberty. The world could do with a lot more patience and a lot less making decisions for others without knowing a darned thing about them.

Zurf you are absolutly right what you said there. I have a lot of elderly friends many over the age of eighty who belong to a group called Grey Power who battle bureaucrats and politicians  advocating for the independence and respect older people deserve.  Grey Power is an advocacy organisation promoting the welfare and well-being of all those citizens in the 50 plus age group.  They monitor what the government is doing and how that will affect their  members – meeting with influential people including politicians, to make their views known.
Grey Power is dedicated to the welfare, interests and concerns of the many people who are over 50 years and is a neutral but assertive voice of influence in the political arena with no party political affiliation.
I spend alot of time with my ninety seven year old mother the thing I hear often from her friends is they feel their family have no time for them. I was a   member of the RSA for many years the Return Services Association.  I would visit many who ended up in  hospital. I was  struck  by how many families couldnt find the time  to suport  their own family members and that shocked me. When some of these people died their families were quick to get to the lawyers and fight over the will. I went to funeral  a couple  of weeks back  for a friend of mine who was single and whose only brother and neice and nephew turned up at the service. I was approached to help with arranging the funeral as none of his family werent interested.  With a couple of his other friends a service was arranged  that we thought would be appropriate . His family  approached me after the service.   They told me they  hadn't seen the deceased for twenty nine years and only came to see if  any of his friends knew if he had left them  anything in a will. It hit home to me again  not all families spend time or care for each other and it is not always anyones fault.  It is just how some family circumstances turn out. Also I have seen the otherside  organisation putting the elderly where they don't want to be or their families want them to be without any consideration for the person's own wishes.. In other words getting involved when there is not the need. I got very sick last year and I am still recovering. If it wasn't for my friends and family I would have ended up having some of my independence and liberty  taken away from me. You are perfectly  right to think the way you do about these things with your experience in this area. of life. I hope there are many more who are having a good discussion about these things.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Zurf I;like the  relaxed way you do songs and pacy guitar playing and your vocals work a treat on Mephis In The Meantime.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Hi everyone back now and will do my best to catch up tomorrow on all the FSOTM stuff smile

Just as an aside note, it might of been better to have all the "discussion on the elderly"  in the chat section, where it would be more fitting rather than here which is simply FSOTM smile

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Sorry Jandle if we can't respect our family members on this thread  as a way of honouring you and those who like you who  have  put a good commitment  to  our older generation what can we do. You have upsept me deeply.I was only honouring the good deeds of folk on here. I am very passionate about supporting older people in our families and when people mention they have that going on on their with own families I will respond.  You can not marginalize old people just because they are old they are our history and from them we learn our futiure.
No song is worth more than our perants.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

Hi Peatle, totally agree, we can not marginalize older people at all.  I totally agree with what you have been saying with regards to all of this.  I have all sorts of scenario`s going on with both of my eldery parents, life threatening and including dementia .... so I certainly have great feeling for the subject!  But as much as I am passionate about the subject (a worthy subject to discuss and consider) I stick by my comment, it is a discussion for the chat section.  I did not mean to offend or demean the subject or your heart for the elderly.  Sorry if you have taken offence.

Re: FEBRUARY 2018 FSOTM - CITIES AND COUNTRIES

I completely agree in what you have been discussing.  We moved back to where I live so my wife could help with her parents and me mine. It worked out for both of us to help and because it was home for both of us, we just never left afterwards. We still visit there graves. The best part was spending time with them while we had them.
