Topic: Banjo

A friend gave me a 6 sing banjo he bought a year ago and never played it. Since it is a 6 string it is turned the same as a guitar.
After reading post I realized there are none on banjos. Does anyone else on Chordie play a banjo?

Re: Banjo

I turned it and played some last night and for some songs it was a lot of fun. The sound is good  and I will pick up some new strings. Have no idea yet how long they last.

I'm adding this link:  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/folk-tra … ring-banjo

A bit down the page is some information about strings and a short video that might be informative to you.  Playing for hours daily, I can usually squeeze 6 months out of a set of strings before the tone degrades to an intolerable level (D'Addarios).

Have Fun!!

Re: Banjo

Thank you. The one given to me is a Deering Goodtime Solana 6 Banjo Nylon String 6-String.  I can use the same string I use on classical guitars and is a D'Addario EJ45 Pro-Arte. It still sounds like a banjo just a little more mellow.  The hard case still is round at the bottom and still leaves room and support for the necks. For traditional  some PP&M and Kingston Trio type music is sounds very good.

Re: Banjo

That looks like an interesting instrument - never seen a nylon string one before!!! It would be a bit too big for my smaller hands, but sounds like it 'matches' a classical guitar sizing from the description in this video - good luck with it, post a video and show us how you tamed it!!

Cheers

It really if fun to play and easy to pick like more like a classical guitar.

Re: Banjo

I am doing a concert a a university Friday and one of my better student is on a full music scholarship. I talked with him late last night and we are going to play Dueling Banjos with him on guitar and me on the banjo. Since he attends there we will play it first and I also emailed him the music to it. It is a concert and nothing says we can not have some fun with it.

Re: Banjo

I have read you posts and have noted them.  With due respect I am guessing none of you have ever been to a classical concert. Even phones have to be turned off and they are never recorded. If they were than I would never be invited back to the same location again and I play at the same place year after year. Also we sell CD's and usually that adds to the proceeds.

I believe you may have misunderstood us.

We're just talking about some home recordings of "My Banjo and Me."  smile

Re: Banjo

Hi,
I just joined Chordie. I am a 5 string banjo player among other instruments. As such I don't call a six-string instrument, tuned like a guitar, a banjo. smile. Oh, and by the way, my son is a classical bassoon player (Eastman and Cleveland Institute of Music), I have been to MANY classical concerts.

Re: Banjo

peteh welcome to Chordie and good to have you as member and a banjo player too. Here is a link a link to the one I have that has a classical neck: https://www.deeringbanjos.com/products/ … e-solana-6
