Topic: OCTOBER 2017 FSOTM – CAT STEVENS – TOM PETTY

This month we have TWO COVERS that have been chosen by your votes … one form the USA and one from the UK.
 
USA - voted in was TOM PETTY.  No particular song was named, so therefore you can cover ANY SONG of his that you want.  He had many well-known songs such as Free Fallin`, I wont Back Down, American Girl, Stop Dragin` My Heart Around, You Wreck Me to name a few.

From Wikipedia:  Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He was also a member and co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys, and his early band Mudcrutch.
Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist, many of which are mainstays on adult contemporary and classic rock radio. His music became popular among younger generations. In his career, Petty sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. In 2002, Petty was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Petty suffered cardiac arrest early in the morning of October 2, 2017, and died that night at the UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica, California.

UK -  the song voted in was FATHER & SON by CAT STEVENS. 

From Wikipedia:  "Father and Son" is a popular song written and performed by English singer-songwriter Cat Stevens (now known as Yusuf Islam) on his 1970 album Tea for the Tillerman. The song frames an exchange between a father not understanding a son's desire to break away and shape a new life, and the son who cannot really explain himself but knows that it is time for him to seek his own destiny.
Stevens sings in a deeper register for the father's lines, while using a higher one for those of the son. Additionally, there are backing vocals provided by Stevens' guitarist and friend Alun Davies beginning mid-song, singing an unusual chorus of simple words and sentences such as "No" and "Why must you go and make this decision alone?".

Thanks for the kind words. That's one that's in my regular cycle of songs.  It took me a long time to work out the arrangement. So hopefully it won't scare anyone off.

I pulled out Father & Son, and need to brush up on it more.  I had a finger picking pattern that worked pretty well with it, but have forgotten it. I'll dig back through some old recordings of practices to see whether I can find it and remind myself.

There were a few Tom Petty tunes over the weekend and they all sounded great!  I'm still surprised that no one did Free Fallin' - I actually have that one in my book, so I'll see if I can find a few minutes to record it before the month ends.  FINGERS CROSSED!

I've got a version of Free FAllin' from Acoustic Guitar magazine somewhere around here.  It's not in my song book.  Funny, but that's the one I was going to play because it's kind of how I've been feeling lately.

Since no one seems to be posting I will put a modernised version of Father And Son up. Based on what  I hear some fathers and sons saying about each other today. I stretched the cover version rules a bit here..

Ha ha!  Funny!  Good job. 

Nice that you got that characteristic ringing in at the end of the verses. I've never been able to do that. I learned the song as part of a finger picking exercise years ago and have never been able to unlearn the wrong way that I learned the song.

True story. When I started college, my father told me, "Relax a little would you? Have some fun.  DON'T get a job!"  When I graduated high school, I had two jobs (one had been an apprenticeship, so I had already earned a Master Artist certificate or some such from the state) and was running two businesses of my own. My father wanted me to have some fun before I started a career.  So my father actually did tell me to "Carry on mucking around."  My room mates were under clear instruction to tell my parents I was at a bar if they called while I was at work.

Well I lived up to my METALIZER moniker, though I tried to be more BO DIDDLEY STYLE.  I think Tom would like the Idea of really changing it up. and my voice just wont do it.  tonight was a total of about 15 tries, and  alsoI tried on acoustic the other night.  Either my voice was not too terrible but I muffed up a line, or my fingers got stuck, but this is it.  Its my Tradition LP into the RP set on a clean setting with delay. my C1 Berhinger mic into a compressor and my classic (IE: 80s old Ibanez sound tank) digital delay.  then it all got glossed over in Audacity with some more reverb and compression and leveling.
