Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Try to be positive it will help in the future. I have owned several Gibson electrics and love them but have not owned an acoustic. I have played a couple acoustics over the years and I do like them. I own Martins and Taylors and the Gibson neck is a little different. Not bad just a little different feel. I find my hand likes the feel of the Martin/Taylor style neck. I do like the sound of the Gibson which again is different from the Martin/Taylor sound. I say go for it as you have your wife's approval and you know it will be passed on to your family. Let us know  when you get your new friend.

Welcome to the forums Trev. I absolutely love my J45 - she is as good of a guitar as I have ever played and I'm fortunate enough to have some friends with some very high end instruments. One thing is Gibson is not known for their quality control and I understand there can be fairly large differences between individual guitars even of the same model, so I encourage you to play every one you can put your hands on and find the one that "speaks" to you. As for the J45. If something amiss ever happens to Topdown, check my office for his guitar because that J45 is the best guitar I've ever played.

Welcome from another newbie (I'm not longer the new kid on the block!!) - whilst your diagnosis sucks, spare a thought for those people who go to work one day and never come back, who didn't have such luck ... 3 years is a long time to make some good memories, so make the most of it while you can, because some of us won't know when our time will be up; I've started recording videos for my kids because having them at such a late age, I'm not sure I'll be around to see grandkids ... wishing you all the best ...

Evening everybody, here it is near 7 pm on Thursday night of February 8th 2018, and I thought I would let you all know how much I am enjoying my Gibson guitar. I am just about ready to put the third set of strings on, which I will do tomorrow. I guess that tells ya something, don’t it! What a player, and what sound! And it’s so light! If I knew how to post pictures I would so I will ask my wife to give me a crash course and I will try to post some. Lots of playing time = frequent string changing ... but that's a good thing, right? I certainly agree with Neo about Elixir coated strings, although I prefer their NanoWeb 80/20s on my acoustics (just a little brighter). You must have good calluses on your fretting fingers by now. Always improves the playing, tone, and sustain.

OMG, neo. i don't change my strings often and i have 6 unopened packs in my drawer, but i couldn't abuse my beauties by nor restringing for 2 years, the sweaty fingers alone would make them black and toneless in 6 months! see, i told you i don't change them often.

Trevor, so sorry to hear of your troubles, the least of which is changing strings too often.   welcome to the forums, and i wish you many years of happiness with your new love.

shall i be brutally honest? i will anyway.

they are lacking that ring that new strings have and i like the screech as you move your fingers up the frett board. new strings have to bed in before they hold their tuning but as i have found; as you play further up the arm they tend to lose their tune, octaves on harmonics aren't where they should be so solos up top sound flat.

it's a fact of life that when you decide to change the strings after the next gig, they sound great! tones are nice etc. it's just when you look at the 5th and 6th strings they're almost black and sound quite dead...so they've got to go.

i was noodling last night on my Crafter semi acoustic, did some bending on the 12th frett (due to old strings) and when i went to play open chords the high E and D strings had lost their tuning, so a change is unavoidable even though the strings sound great when recording. when they gorra go they gorra go.

i think i tried elixirs once but when i went back to get more the store had gone bust! i'll have to see if they're on Amazon next time i need some

Thanks for the responses and the advice on the strings. The elixirs have been my strings for at least ten years now and with this change coming up, by that I mean strings, I am considering on putting Gibson 80/20 bronze back on as these were original equipment when I purchased the guitar. I liked the sound, I liked the sustain, and I certainly liked the highs and lows. I have always liked the elixir strings but for some reason or another, they are not doing what they should on this guitar. Why...I cannot answer that but maybe it has to do with a whole different type of guitar that I have never had before. Sounds laughable when I put it down in writing, but... all my other guitars have never cost over a thousand dollars each and the expensive strings from elixir have definitely improved their sound.
