Topic: The time is right!

Hi all, I have been hanging around here, quietly, for a long time, reading posts, listening to music, learning new old songs, laughing with you all and even shedding a tear or two at heartbreaking news. I have been playing an assortment of guitars, acoustic and electric, a mandolin and a banjo that I bought at a flea market. But....Right now I have a chance to buy a Gibson J45 standard, new, which here in Ontario Canada is $2899.00 before taxes. This will be the last guitar that I ever purchase as I have been diagnosed with an incurable lung disease and Doc says I got about 3 maybe 5 years left. In the past whenever I purchased a new guitar my children or grandchildren have got the old one .I have 3 children and 7 grandchildren and so far everybody has a guitar. That's a lot of guitars. Mind you, they have never been Martins or Gibsons or Taylors but they have been good players and they always sound good. So....I have played the J45 Guitar Center and other expensive Martins and Taylors but I found that the Gibson had the right sound for me and was and would have been at the time, my choice had I been able to afford it. My wife, bless her heart, says, do this Trev and enjoy it while you still can. So... there ya have it, my very first Gibson, and while I was writing this I fully confirmed in my mind that I will purchase a J45 this week. I was going to ask what experience any of you might have with the J45 .....and yes...I still will, so just let me know what you all think. Thanks for your time and patience today.     Your friend Trevor Calhoun.

Re: The time is right!

Great to hear from you after lurking for so long, and while it's certainly tragic about your diagnosis, I admire your decision to make the most of it, pass music to your kids and grandkids, and enjoy the time you have here - what better way to enjoy than with a Gibson!

All the best to you and yours.

Re: The time is right!

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Try to be positive it will help in the future. I have owned several Gibson electrics and love them but have not owned an acoustic. I have played a couple acoustics over the years and I do like them. I own Martins and Taylors and the Gibson neck is a little different. Not bad just a little different feel. I find my hand likes the feel of the Martin/Taylor style neck. I do like the sound of the Gibson which again is different from the Martin/Taylor sound. I say go for it as you have your wife's approval and you know it will be passed on to your family. Let us know  when you get your new friend.

Re: The time is right!

Firstly I wouldn't know what a J45 sounded like if you hit me with one. Sorry to learn of your diagnosis, but as for the doctors prognosis of 3 to 5 years, forget it. How does he know he doesn't have a crystal ball. I belong to a FB group of people who have been diagnosed with terminal brain cancers and many of them way out live their prognosis, in some cases by decades. Keep a positive attitude and live every day like it's your last, we all should. Because one day it will be. Good luck.

Re: The time is right!

Welcome to Chordie, Trevor, from another Canuck out here on the east coast. Tough news about your lung issues, but hopefully you have many enjoyable years ahead of you. I've only ever played one Gibson, and it was a jumbo C&W style of guitar with a big sound. The J45 is the standard by which a lot are measured, so it would be hard to go wrong picking one up.

And again ... welcome to Chordie, eh? wink

Re: The time is right!

Welcome to the forums Trev. I absolutely love my J45 - she is as good of a guitar as I have ever played and I'm fortunate enough to have some friends with some very high end instruments. One thing is Gibson is not known for their quality control and I understand there can be fairly large differences between individual guitars even of the same model, so I encourage you to play every one you can put your hands on and find the one that "speaks" to you. Good luck!

Re: The time is right!

Great to hear from you Trevor and welcome to the forum.

Whilst I have never owned a Gibson I believe with any guitar, no matter what the make, you must hold her and play her and you will know whether she is right for you.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but I will reiterate what others have said to be positive (which you appear to be anyway) because we never know what is round the corner and I know several people who have proved their doctors diagnosis wrong.

Re: The time is right!

Sorry about your lungs. That bites.

As for the J45. If something amiss ever happens to Topdown, check my office for his guitar because that J45 is the best guitar I've ever played.

Re: The time is right!

Hello Trevor sorry to hear about your lungs. Your doing the right thing getting that guitar I don't own one of those but have  played one and man they play  beautiful, even in my hands, With your large family it must be beautiful to have you all together making music? If you ever get the chance make some recordings. It would be nice if you feel like it to hear your playing  here on Chordie. Keep  posting on here its good to have another voice join in.

Re: The time is right!

Welcome from another newbie (I'm not longer the new kid on the block!!) - whilst your diagnosis sucks, spare a thought for those people who go to work one day and never come back, who didn't have such luck ... 3 years is a long time to make some good memories, so make the most of it while you can, because some of us won't know when our time will be up; I've started recording videos for my kids because having them at such a late age, I'm not sure I'll be around to see grandkids ... wishing you all the best ...

Re: The time is right!

Well...thank you all for responding and thank you all for your best wishes and hopes for the future. Every day is a blessing and will not be wasted. So.....I did it..I bought myself a new guitar. My wife and I traveled north to see our oldest granddaughter who has just just become a registered nurse, and I brought my guitar fund  with me(don't leave home without it) and decided to visit Music Pro while I was there and ...lo and behold.... a Gibson J45. Brand spanking new,.....shinning,sparkling,bellowing in the corner with.....now get this........my name on it! So....here I am at 5.15am on Friday morning typing on a iPod in motel waiting for my wife to wake up so I can play this wonderful guitar again. Sheesh....I can,t understand why she can,t smell the coffee????                 Your friend Trevor Calhoun.

Re: The time is right!

Evening everybody, here it is near 7 pm on Thursday night of February 8th 2018, and I thought I would let you all know how much I am enjoying my Gibson guitar. I am just about ready to put the third set of strings on, which I will do tomorrow. I guess that tells ya something, don’t it! What a player, and what sound! And it’s so light! If I knew how to post pictures I would so I will ask my wife to give me a crash course and I will try to post some. I just wanted to let you all know I was enjoying the guitar to the fullest and to say hello!       Your friendTrevor Calhoun.

That's good news!! As far as strings go, I always use the Elixer Polyweb coated strings; they seem to last forever:

As far as posting images goes, have a quick look at the BBCode page which shows you haw to do it:

HTH!!

Re: The time is right!

Lots of playing time = frequent string changing ... but that's a good thing, right? big_smile I certainly agree with Neo about Elixir coated strings, although I prefer their NanoWeb 80/20s on my acoustics (just a little brighter). You must have good calluses on your fretting fingers by now. Always improves the playing, tone, and sustain.

Hmmm, I'll have to try them next time, but this week I changed my strings for the first time since 2016 ... yikes

OMG, neo. i don't change my strings often and i have 6 unopened packs in my drawer, but i couldn't abuse my beauties by nor restringing for 2 years, the sweaty fingers alone would make them black and toneless in 6 months! see, i told you i don't change them often.

Trevor, so sorry to hear of your troubles, the least of which is changing strings too often. lol  welcome to the forums, and i wish you many years of happiness with your new love.

The Elixirs still sound good after that 18 months ... this was the last video I did with those 'old strings' on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOu1GymPpK0

Let me know if they sound 'dead' to you ... ?? I'm really impressed with the Elixir strings!!! smile

Re: The time is right!

shall i be brutally honest? i will anyway. smile

they are lacking that ring that new strings have and i like the screech as you move your fingers up the frett board. new strings have to bed in before they hold their tuning but as i have found; as you play further up the arm they tend to lose their tune, octaves on harmonics aren't where they should be so solos up top sound flat.

it's a fact of life that when you decide to change the strings after the next gig, they sound great! tones are nice etc. it's just when you look at the 5th and 6th strings they're almost black and sound quite dead...so they've got to go.

i was noodling last night on my Crafter semi acoustic, did some bending on the 12th frett (due to old strings) and when i went to play open chords the high E and D strings had lost their tuning, so a change is unavoidable even though the strings sound great when recording. when they gorra go they gorra go.

i think i tried elixirs once but when i went back to get more the store had gone bust! i'll have to see if they're on Amazon next time i need some

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: The time is right!

just checked them out and i'm not surprised you only change them every 2 years, at £30 for 2 sets i'd want to get my money's worth too, quite apart from the fact that the wife would go bananas

Re: The time is right!

Thanks for the responses and the advice on the strings. The elixirs have been my strings for at least ten years now and with this change coming up, by that I mean strings, I am considering on putting Gibson 80/20 bronze back on as these were original equipment when I purchased the guitar. I liked the sound, I liked the sustain, and I certainly liked the highs and lows. I have always liked the elixir strings but for some reason or another, they are not doing what they should on this guitar. Why...I cannot answer that but maybe it has to do with a whole different type of guitar that I have never had before. Sounds laughable when I put it down in writing, but... all my other guitars have never cost over a thousand dollars each and the expensive strings from elixir have definitely improved their sound. Maybe someone else could weigh in on this. Watch for pictures coming up shortly.     Your friend, Trevor Calhoun.

Hi Trevor,

Gutted to hear about your diagnosis. I don't think your wife's wrong in suggesting you to get the J45 and enjoy some terrific moments with it. smile

Cheers!
