Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

Other than black gospel and some cracker spirtuals (like in O Brother Where Art Thou), "Contemporary Christian Music" can best be used to put you to sleep. Surely, if God were real, he would inspire better music.

im a christian but i have to agree with this statement

contemporary Christian sucks bad

theres no real Christian blues

-since blues is the foundation for most modern music

-there can therefore be no good modern Christian music

--that was very scientific if i do say so myself

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

You should try Jimmy Bratcher if you want Christian Blues.

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

I thank god Im an athiest - religion is ancient mind manipulation - a kind of crowd control for primative people - science has just about debunked the whole GOD SQUAD CON JOB

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

I totally agree with you there.

And this looks like it is getting into a religious argument about who is right, who is wrong, is there a god is there not a god,

so lets calm down folk before someone blows.

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

In saying this it sounds like you've listened to every Christian song.

You know I'm not one to defend secular music, but in saying this the music in Christian contemporary and Secular contemporary are very much alike, you'll meet lots of people that will fight you there since there are more people that listen to secular than Christian.

And alot of other styles don't have blues as a foundation. Rap, Classical.

I know you have a closed mind on the subject, because the only thing you like is Country and Oldies Rock.  You're entitled to you opinion, but I don't agree with you.

yes but rap is crap and blues is based on classical so your statement is void

i also listen to some newer stuff

old pop

reggea

softer metal

blues

jazz

2-step

and you say i have a closed mind:

you listen to all Christian

hmm that equals:

no blues

no classical

no classic rock

no jam bands

im pretty sure theres no Christian reggea

theres Christian metal but you dont listen to that or jazz or 2- step

i beleive my friend that you are the one with a closed mind

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

Guys,

Im not a Christian, I do not really believe there is a God... but I do believe in good, powerfull and beautyfull music and in some (rare) cases it's inspired by religion...

Anyone ever heard of Neal Morse? or Spock's Beard for that matter (the band Neal left after becoming a Christian)?

No? Shame on you all...  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

This man is absolutely awsome, in his lyrics, in his music-writing and in his playing ability and singing... but yeah he sings about God and the way he had to go to find Him... so? I don't care... I still love the music he makes and the lyrics he writes!

Go check him, it's worth it!

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

I agree with Spaminator. Go ahead and believe whatever you want. I'm talking about music and most contemporary "Christian" music sucks.

I am not a practicing Christian but when I hear a Black Gospel music I'm like Marc Cohen in Walking in Memphis. When asked if he's a Christian, he says, "Ma'am, I am tonight." That's what I want to hear in the music. I want my soul to be stirred and my passions awakened.

Most contemporary Christian music is bland. It's as bland as Top 40 pop, modern country music and American Idol. This is all crap. It's pseudo music without a hint of passion or originality to it.

But it's hard to write this type of music when it was church leaders who condemned Rock & Roll as the devil's music (always made me wonder why Satan had better music than the churches). Rock & Roll awakens emotions that most religions (outside black gospel) are just not comfortable with. That's why it's so hard to write moving contemporary Christian music. There are a couple of good writers, but not many.

Most of the music is as shallow as fundamentalism (and I don't mean that as a put down to anyone's beliefs, but good music is about asking questions, searching for depth, not about having all the answers).

Still, if that's what turns your crank, go for it. But Christian Rock & Roll to me is as strange as right-wing folk music like in the movie Bob Roberts.

Re: 4 Christian Songwriters

I'm a christian that likes to listen to both secular and christian artist. I stumbled across this thread and the conversation at hand is interesting. I would just like to get the opinion of those that say christian music sucks to give examples of christian artist whom they think "suck". To be honest, some of them do really suck but there are those few that are really good. Just like in secular music, you wouldn't group the stupid bands with the great ones because they are classified in the same genre, would you?

Seems like you answered your own questions there.

Gospel and "cracker spirituals" (we like to call it "bluegrass") is great music.  If I were God, that's what I'd invent to celebrate "me."

I think you're projecting the "%90" rule a bit.   %90 of *everything* is crap.   Christian music is no exception to that rule.   Neither is whatever you like.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Now, them's fightin' words on this forum!

haha, what i mean is that most people here on the forum probably adore the Beatles, me being one of them. Even if you dont like their type of music, you have to at least acknowledge the fact that they were arguably the most popular band of the century, if not ever.

Just thought i'd point that out.
