Another month, and two more songs to choose from!  Grab your guitar, uke, harp, autoharp, band in a box, drum set, tuners, mandolin, drinks of choice, and something to record with!

Take It Easy by the Eagles:

"Take It Easy" is a song written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, and recorded by the Eagles with Frey singing lead vocals. It was the band's first single, released on May 1, 1972.

Ripple by the Grateful Dead:

"Ripple" is the sixth song on the Grateful Dead album American Beauty. It was released as the B-side to the single "Truckin'".  Robert Hunter wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking half a bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Jerry Garcia wrote the music to this song.
Several lines throughout the song have been compared to the 23rd Psalm of the Bible.



Remember, these are meant to be COVERS of the songs.

You don't have to be a "tribute" type player and make it sound exactly like the original.  You can always change it up!  Go do your thing, and come back here to post a link to your recorded version in a reply to this thread!

Well, I realized on the way home that I didn't save all the recordings I made with my Zoom to Joe's hard drive.  So, I guess it's up to me to post those!  Late Saturday evening, when everyone was ready to put the guitars away we decided to give Ripple a try together.  Uncle Joe's Band, MekidsDad, myself, and Joe's friend Scott are all playing and singing along.  Here's our late night attempt for ya'll!

Scott - we're now onto the 10th of October.  You better get your hiney down to the man cave and carve out a tune for us! You said you could do ONE of these... I can't wait to hear which one it is!  I'm also intrigued to find out how they sound with the distortion cranked.  ha ha!

I thought about trying Ripple on my own, and I might still give it a shot.  Then I was going to try Take it Easy.  I printed it out, and tried to strum through it a little - however Mekidsdad still has issues ingrained deep within his psyche, where he thinks all covers need to sound exact and stopped me mid-strum mentioning I should listen to the song to get the strumming pattern.  I thought, "Well shucks! Sure, I could do that.  I'm sure my standard strum pattern could be adjusted a little.  But HECK!  This is for the FSOTM!"

Now, I'm thinking I need to just TOTALLY CHANGE it up and turn it into something that sounds NOTHING like the original!  Ba ha ha ha ha!  (evil laugh)  Re-arrangement time!  wink  Anyone else going to try to butcher one of these songs with me?  tongue

Sorry.  Work has been absolutely bonkers of late, and I have had little time to listen to our Chordians performing these songs, and less time to record one. 

I have been doing a campfire strummer version of Take It Easy for a few years, so I knocked it out quick.  My voice is bad.  My picking is bad.  My timing isn't horrible.  My enunciation is.  With that introduction, here it is.

I am having a very hard time with the timing on Ripple.  It did get me to pull out a harmonica and toot on it, which has been fun.  I don't think anyone on Chordie, excepting maybe Dirty Ed, has heard me toot on a harmonica.

For what it's worth DE, it still smells like Crown Royal and Macanudos thanks to Patty.

I think you Zurfilized that song nicely.  wink  I'm planning to do something similar - though haven't had tons of time.  Jim printed the song out too, so we'll see what happens.  I think I MAY have heard you diddle on a harmonica at some point. Perhaps it was on Skype once upon a time?

Practice is going poorly.  I am swamped by work, kids, and volunteer activities.  I'll keep working on it, though.  It's an interesting song.  It sounds simple enough, but is really challenging to get the verses right on the tail of the chorus each time without even a run-up note, and the melody is simple enough but is plumb evading me picking it out on guitar even when I have found some decent tabs for it. 

If I don't get it during October, it may just get posted to Soundcloud at a later time.  Hard to say.

HI everyone ............. i have put up my very quick and to be honest, horrible version of TAKE IT EASY on Sound Cloud.  Literally tonight was the only chance i have had to try one of these two songs and as i don`t know Ripple that well, i thought i would try this one before heading away tomorrow for a week.  I truly struggled with this one as i have a very sore throat which has decided to come before i head away tomorrow (very annoying).  Anyway, at least I attempted one of them b4 i go ............see you when i get back.
