Ok, so I had to listen to a bunch of this gal's songs to find one I liked the best. Her voice is a bit too nasally for my likes. She seriously needs to push consonants more, as her words tend to run together in a flurry of vowels. I hope that doesn't sound too mean, but I almost didn't put her songs up because I'm picky like that! She's STILL got some serious vocal skills, some really thoughtful lyrics, and chord progressions. This one is one of more clearly vocalized songs she's got up there. Hope you enjoy!

Great post, MKM! I agree with your assessment of her voice, but it seems to be intentional. A lot of the younger singers are doing this for some reason ... not sure what the appeal is. It's certainly a well-written piece, and it's encouraging to see so many younger musicians coming to the fore. I'm sooooo glad that hiphop doesn't rule them all.

Oh goodness... hip hop is getting quite crazy! I've noticed a lot of it tends to merge in with Pop now, and even a lot of the newer country songs have a pop/hip hop flare to them. It's frustrating for sure. My 11 year old loves it all. I'll get into a song and be all, "YEAH! This is good!" and then they'll go from this great chorus line to some rap type junk for a verse and I'm like, "WHAT THE HECK?" I get an eye roll then and "Mooooom" as she talks along with them. Ugh. -- She knows Tom Dooley though, so it's all good.

You've had lots of great selections so far, MKM, but I have to say Emily is the best one yet ... what an amazing talent. Amazing range and expression with her voice, and pretty decent chops on the guitar, too! I really gotta wonder who could possibly place ahead of her in the GC competition ... had to be something extra special.

She had a Pop album in Canada when she was a young teen as well.
She moved to Los Angeles and began working on the sound we all know and love before she was even old enough to graduate high school.
She's "my age" So, I find this all very very fascinating when I look at the dates that she did these things.

Anna Nalick though, should be so much more popular than she currently is. Hopefully, she'll get more songs out there and gain some more traction. I don't know... I am starting to sound like my parents though! LOL!

I did know that Alanis was Canadian, but am badly out-numbered here on Chordie, so didn't wan't to overdo it with the flag waving! 
And regarding Anna Nalick and the whole popularity thing ... popularity is pointless. It can be bought by purchasing airplay time on the mainstream radio stations, and when the DJs start calling it a hit, the mindless masses will consider it a hit. Good music is good music. Most of the prog rock and fingerstyle I like isn't popular, but who cares, right?
Anna's work is terrific, and stands on it's own two feet. Keep this great material coming, MKM. I'm enjoying this new world of talent I would never have heard of, if you weren't introducing it to us.

:blushing: I actually have one. Having one doesn't make me any better at playing one though. Ha! I DO need to pick it up more! There was another video of her on there where I would have SWORE she was playing a piano her fingers were moving so fast! It was pretty amazing. I didn't use it here because the lyrics didn't do much for me.
