Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

How odd. I never saw anything like that before. Passionflower is just amazing,  I thought us men couldn't multi task, but here we got a bloke playing percussion, singing, playing guitar and tuning all at the same time. I wish I could do one of those things properly.

Isham Jones'  "I'll See You in My Dreams"  (covered by Chet Atkins & Mark Knopfler)

Two of the all-time greats, having a relaxed duel and enjoying themselves.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

So relaxing, I forgot I was even listening to it... and had a nice smile on my face while drinking my coffee this morning and having my poke around Chordie!  smile  Thanks TF!  Keep em coming!

TF

They are so freaking good , it's crazy !
They played it effortlessly, and made the song have such a feel good aura about it.
I''d quit my job tomorrow if i could play like that.
Thanks for sharing

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Thats just not fair, making it look so easy.  They could have at least stuck a few bum notes in there just to make me feel better. Nice one TF

John Butler's  "Ocean"  (original composition)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdYJf_ybyVo

Something a bit different this week ... fingerstyle on a 12-string. John Butler's another great musician from the land down under. I love the comment on YouTube from someone's 6-year-old daughter:

"How come he's not singing?"  followed by  "Ohhh ... the guitar's singing for him."  Well said!

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Never heard of John Butler, but what a player, great co ordination.  How do they learn to play like that?

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Good question, KIR ...

There's a lot of pick-less notes they use, by tapping the string in the frets. Mine won't give that level of volume or definition when I do it, and neither do several high-end guitars I've tried in several stores. No problem on the electric, due to the way the string vibes are captured magnetically. I suspect they're using a higher fret wire to enable this technique, which is vital to playing this style properly ... more research needed.

I've started noodling around with some of Tobias Rauscher's teaching on his "Fingerstyle Guitar Academy" website, and will be featuring some of his work in coming weeks:

http://www.tobias-rauscher.com

Thanks for the interest, KIR ... it certainly is a style of playing that absorbs ones attention!

Hailing from Germany, here's a young man with impressive skills and compositional ability. His website also has free lessons for anyone wanting to learn this fascinating style of playing. (www.tobiasguitar.com)

That is just brilliant, but their isn't much point in old banana fingers here visiting his website.

The Mamas & Papas  "California Dreaming"   (covered by Michael Chapdelaine)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu78nxzY3uk

Very nice arrangement, and Michael is soooo good at putting emotion into his work.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Such emotion in music.  I really adore when I can FEEL the music by simply listening.  The crescendos and decrescendos...

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

I still remember where I first heard this song.  It was a movie. Hollywood Nights with Tony Danza.  This is a great version! I love it!

Spencer Elliott   "The Battle of Wonderland"   (original composition)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAxK1z-BUUk

Here's a great demo of another technique many finger-stylists employ, which are the two-finger harmonics they can get all over the fret board. Spencer uses them liberally & effortlessly throughout this song, but it's a very difficult thing to do ... just try it!

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Periphery   "Scarlet"   (arrangement & cover by Mike Dawes)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmf54oNI6ts

It's amazing how well music from any genre adapts to fingerstyle. This song is by American "Progressive Metal" group Periphery, and Dawes' arrangement would easily convince a person that it was written for acoustic guitar.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

TF

Beautiful guitar playing - very talented.

Amazed at the length of his fingers as well.

Don't think my short stubs could ever do that !  smile

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Thanks, TIG ...

He does have quite the long boney fingers, doesn't he? I have "long stubs", which makes speed like this challenging, not to mention trying to buy gloves that fit. Although I've got little hope of ever playing like this, I find watching these talented guys does give me some ideas to try now and then, as well as being just plain enjoyable.

Another enjoyable piece by Michael, with some innovative percussion ideas to capture some of the song's elements.

Steve Howe   "The Clap / Mood For a Day"   (original compositions)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ZmIFR4Sc0

Howe names a number of guitarists as influences, more notably Chet Atkins as is obvious. In an interview, he said he took from Chet "the idea that one guitarist could play any kind of guitar style." (November 2000)

Don Ross   "How to Eat an Avalanche"   (original composition)

Have to be out the door early tomorrow, so am posting this early. I'm excited already about seeing Don Ross in concert in late-September ... I won't be sitting on my hands like this group is doing.

Muriel Anderson   "Sakura & Yikki Yukki Sushi"   (original arrangements)

A phenomenal guitarist, a delightful personality, and a terrific sense of humor. This one could almost go in MKM's "Quirky SInger / Songwriter" thread on Thursday. I know if you watch this, you'll enjoy it.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Wow!  Absolutely amazing!  Who knew the guitar could even sound like that?  smile  Thank you TF!  You find some serious gems, and thank you for reminding me about this thread.  I've been so crazy busy lately, I haven't had time to peruse Chordie as I'd like and I needed that!  smile
