Topic: Daryl - self-taught guy

Hello to all of you. Im Daryl. 15 yrs. of age, a newbie and is just starting out my journey to become a professional guitarist. You see, my good and new friend, Scott (THE METALIZER) introduced me this page to help me more about my goals to learn and master guitar and to achieve all my goals. That's why, I registered to experience all kind of guitar forums and stuff that maybe, can help me out. I really am thankful that there are still people who love to help newbies out there like me, special mention to Scott Sailer. I dont want to have regrets in life by simply quitting in learning and playing guitar just because I dont have friends or family that could teach me how cuz they dont know how to play the instrument, and that Im only a self-taught guy. Hope you can help me! Cheers!

Hi Daryl
Welcome. When you get into music it is a little bit like being a mad scientist because the only way to get good at it is to practise and experiment.
At times it can be an emotional rollercoaster especially  when you have days when you just can't make it work but when you do it is like reaching a peak. By being patient and pushing through the many frustrations of trying to get a good sound you do get bits that work and get to master more of it. When you can make bits work it is a magical feeling. Then you find the thing you can now do  is not challenging so you end up exploring other avenues which challenges your comfort zones. With music you never stop learning. Even though I am an older person everybody no mater how experienced or old they are teaches me something. Look forward to following your future growth and remember good things take time.

Welcome to Chordie!!

Scott is a good guy, and you have come to the right place for encouragement on your journey.  There are folks hanging around here that range from beginning "back-porch players" to professionals (as in doing this music thing for an actual living!), and all the stuff between.

Good advice so far, but the most important in my view.... is never...never be shy about asking questions, 'cause the answers are golden!

Daryl - welcome to the best place for getting help from the friendliest people on the planet.
I am sure Scott has sent you to the right place. and I am sure he is an excellent mentor  for learning guitar.... after all - he is "the Metalizer"  and he has covered a couple of my songs really nicely and very cool!
Just like the three words that are the most important words in real estate are " Location,Location, Location"  the three words for guitar playing are " practice, practice, practice"
With that being said however, as a sports coach of over 30 years,  practice is only beneficial if you are practicing correctly and improving.  Make sure you get the right techniques to practice, because practicing the guitar the wrong way just reinforces bad guitar playing.   There are loads of guys and a few gals here that are terrific musicians that you can learn a great deal from... I'm not one of them, I just like to write songs:)
Anyway... welcome to the Chordie family.

Re: Daryl - self-taught guy

Welcome to Chordie, Daryl!

Scott is a great guy!  He's funny, he knows how to rock, and he doesn't give up.  Don't take singing lessons from him, but otherwise he's a good friend to have!  big_smile  He's clearly pointed you in the right direction.  Since Scott sent you here, I'm guessing you're into electric guitar and lots of distortion?  Maybe not, Scott and I are friends off of chordie and I am completely opposite in that arena.  Anyhow, check out the Electric section of the forums for all kinds of information about amps and pedals and switches and stuffs.  The acoustic section will have discussions about tone woods and strings.  Then there's the guitars and accessories section of the forums for discussion about all of the above along with tuners and picks!  Try to put your questions in the right places to get the best response from the people that have answers (ie:  I don't go into the electric section much because I don't know much bout them).  If you're not sure where to put it, guess!  The moderators will move the thread to the correct section if it's not in the right place.  As others have implied, there's NO DUMB QUESTION.  Nope.  There isn't.  As a gal on a mostly guy forum, I had a conversation early in my time here about cutting my nails.  I thought that I'd be scoffed at by the men.  I was NOT.  Turns out, men that play guitar care about their nails too (pickers often keep their nails long on the picking hand and discuss how to have long nails).  smile

Anyhow, Chordie is like the extended family you wish you had around home.  There's Uncle Dirty Ed (who's not dirty at all) and Cousin Roger (who's old enough to be grandpa but often acts like that younger cousin), and there's TIGLJK always offering sage advice to help get you through life (he IS a teacher in RL after all), and of course many many others here - some have already said HI, and more will no doubt.  You'll come to appreciate this crew should you visit often. As I said, no dumb questions.  Ask away, and please do know that no one knows everything!  Often times, you'll find you may have an answer that someone else has asked.  Please, feel free to share what you know!  I'd say most of the community here is like yourself, self-taught. There are some that have had lessons as well.  You're in good hands.  POST AWAY!  (please read the stickies at the top of each section to get a feel for some of the rules here and what some of the sections are about).

Did I mention I'm generally long-winded?  Yep...  always chatty.  Ok, mom's gonna shut it now!  wink

Re: Daryl - self-taught guy

Welcome Daryl. Scott's a good guy, and a friend of mine in real life too. He's a good example in his never ending enthusiasm and his persistence. Plus, he writes some cool songs even if I can't make heads or tails of his chords even when he teaches me.

Have fun, keep learning, ask questions, share, and keep on rocking.

Oh, and  check out Marty Schwartz on GuitarJamz videos on YouTube. He's always giving away good hints for rocking.

Re: Daryl - self-taught guy

Nope guys he is on an Acoustic.  He neglected to say He is also from the Philippians, and we met on Steve Steins guitar FB Guitar Zoom.   He is about my sons age and as FB goes only a few of us were actually helping him with his question. next thing I know we had like 15 replies to each other about guitar so I sent a friend req and got him on here.  Was nice of him to give me credit.  OK Dont make a Lire out of me!

Re: Daryl - self-taught guy

Welcome to Chordie, Nomane!

Everyone's said it all before me, but I'll echo the fact that this is friendly group here, and coaching is available upon request ... I haven't found anyone gets "preachy". Many of us are self-taught, and will be happy to share what we've learned by trial-and-error (lots of error lol). The one thing I didn't do enough when I was learning, was invest time in the fundamentals, i.e., learning scales. I'm still unlearning a lot of bad habits I picked up from being too eager to learn songs, and not working on the basics.

Enjoy the journey ... music is for life!

Re: Daryl - self-taught guy
