Maybe fate was kind and he didn't remember that, but if he hit some cymbals, he may have wondered where he got the scrapes. smile

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

I don't know if I can call this a funny gig story or not, but I ended up having the opportunity to sing in Essen, Germany when I visited there for the first time in February.  A local guitarists was able to sign me up for an open mic night last minute so I spent 3 days cramming for 6 different cover songs (and 1 original song!) ranging from Taylor Swift to Foo Fighters. smile  That night, my friend and I ended up getting lost and we walked for almost 45 minutes at 10:30 PM in the cold, February, German air (windy as all get-out!) to get to the "gig." To say the least, I was exhausted and my throat was *killing* me.  I was so freakin' nervous but I went on and had A BLAST!! The up side was the house band ended up joining in on the last 3 songs and I ended up playing with a full backing band: acoustic guitar, lead electric, bass, keys, and drums!!  It was FANTASTIC--and the place was packed--NOT because of me but because of the house band!! smile smile  The opportunity of a lifetime for me--I drank it in!! (but I was EXHAUSTED--definitely felt my age that night!) smile smile

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

This is not a gig story. Many years ago when I was walking through a park over in Tokyo Japan I was mobed by a whole bunch of screaming teenage girls who mistook me for a pop star. Maree who was with me was asked by a passer by does he play with Rod Stewart. That was my 15 seconds of mistaken fame. This now  is more a gig story when I was living in Sydney I became friendly with an old Jazz trumpet player. Every now and then I would sing an odd blues number with his band. His band's drummer had a drinking problem and got kicked out of the pub they were playing at.  Im not that good a drummer but filled in for the last set just jamming along to old standards. After the gig, a  gig  guide reporter asked me about my style of drumming. I jokingly told him I came from the  Keith Moon school of drumming.  The next guide that was published noted that a  fill in  drummer  had played the last set with the band. It also  said the drummer from New Zealand had also played drums with the famous Who.

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

Back in the mid 80's I occasionally played with a couple buddies at a local restaurant/bar called the "Cellar".  I only played during the winter months because in the summer any time  I had a free day or two I preferred to spend it kayaking whitewater rivers and do my guitar picking at creek-side campfires. I had already played a few times during the winter and in mid-February I got a call and was asked if I could play the first weekend in March.  I agreed, forgetting that the evening I was asked to play happened to be my 35th birthday.  I finally remembered a day later but decided not to back out of the gig.  It wasn't great pay, 50 bucks and all the beer I could drink to play from 9 to midnight.  If there was a good crowd,  another $30 could be made for playing another hour until the place closed.

We (me, a bass player and a banjo player) arrived at the bar, set up the  PA and was checking sound when a couple kayakers I knew from the Cincinnati area came in.  I asked why they drove 100 miles to hear us play and they said the word was out in the paddling community that it was my birthday, I was playing at the Cellar and there wasn't much else for paddlers to do on March 1st anyway.  I told the bartender to get them each a drink on me and keep a tab so I could settle up at the end of the evening.  A few minutes later another half dozen or so kayakers and rafters came in and I bought each of them their first drink and had it put on my tab.  I had a pretty good repertoire of original "river" songs and was belting then out during the evening as more paddlers from Ohio, Ky and West Virginia came in and joined the local restaurant patrons. Each of their first drinks was on me.  As the evening wore on and the adult beverages flowed, we also began playing some bluegrass tunes as drunk patrons sang, clogged and danced on tables.  The bar owner asked if we could play an extra hour as the party was still going strong.  By this time I also had tipped a few too many and was slurring words to the delight of the crowd.

Finally it was time for the bar to close and it was over.  When they totaled up the tab against my pay, I owed the bar four dollars.............

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

A few years ago we were booked to play a st patricks night party for a bunch of expats in greece .now as a band GB  didnt travel light wealways had a light show an our own kick ass pa system ,ear bleeding loud so we set up and kev our suport act did his usual  60s pop thing and then we took to the stage starting off with a good irish song  whisky in the jar followed by 2 Rory Galagher songs and that about exausted our irish repertoire,so we continued with our usual rock and blues set only to be stopped by the organiser saying  that paddy murphys grandma or some other quaint irish person would now get up and perform unacomanied irish folk songs. Now had  we had earplugs and been paid upfront then I would have probably smiled and laughed it off however we hadnt been paid so my immediate thought was to start packing my gear and leave them to it .Anyway two drunken irish folksongs later the organiser is asking for some one out of the audience to help by singing some more irish songs, however the night was saved when the audience responded with bring the band back on..So we played for an hour and left saying thats the last st paddys night we will ever do.

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

One season that I played double bass in a playhouse orchestra, I witnessed the most amazing feat of athletics and timing I ever expect to see.  The playhouse was in a converted barn. The orchestra pit was actually a loft. The stairs to the loft were in the wings stage right. To get to them, one had to cross the stage between a passage that ran behind seating and the stage right wings. The orchestra was supposed to be in position fifteen minutes before curtain...because there was no curtain.

One day, the orchestra was ready, all except our piano playing leader. As moments ticked by, and actors took position, he was still not around. As the time counted down, we were ready to start without him as the stage lights began to warm. Then, we saw him...all 5'3" slender as a willow branch ... running at full sprint up the passage. He couldn't go on stage, so he sprang up from this full sprint and launched. He grabbed the floor of the pit/loft and pushed. All in one fluid movement, he flew under the safety rail, tucked and rolled, somehow missing instruments, stands, and musicians in the cramped space. When he stood, he was at his piano playing the opening bars of the prelude. He soloed for a moment because we were all still in amazed shock at the witness of his astounding feat of strength and grace.

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

back in the 70's i was playing with a club/rock band (that'll probably mean something different in the US). our drummer liked a drink or two and on this occasion our bassist was also in "the mood". the gig started well enough, but as we got into the second half the alcohol began to show itself in his drumming! now i love Yes music with it's speeding up and slowing down, but when you're playing an out and out rocker namely "summertime blues" a la the Who, slowing down is the last thing you want. but apparently our drummer was so sozzled that he kept falling asleep and eventually fell off his stool too! we finished the night without him.

another time another band, we were playing the last gig with our drummer (different guy) and his replacement came with us to get a feel for what we did. now this was the 70's and we were all in our 20's and we were an out and out rock band and we were giving it the beans when a young lady that was shall we say scantily dressed was dancing right at the front in full view of the new drummer, arms up in the air, no bra (sorry amy) so, sooner or later we knew what would happen, and it did. we were all watching intently and dare i say speeding up in expectation of the revelation. we were not disappointed! when we asked the new guy later, he had been so intent on watching the old drummer that he hadn't even seen it! but we took him on anyway, but he kept his eyes open after that.

Great stories so far.  Good idea for a thread. I'll have to go check out Strummer's story on the other forum.

Z, it should be under the section called "Song Requests" with the title, "Well, Dondra Wants To Request......". You'll need to scroll down, as it is one of my last posts.

Great stories gentleman !  I wish I had the talent to perform.
I enjoyed your stories immensely. EAsybeat I can feel your pain.... I gave my wife 5 coupons for Christmas, each one good for " stop playing and singing for the evening!"

Hey Bill, we can't merge it into this thread... it would end up as it's own thread, and then Gaham's reply wouldn't make a lot of sense, and you'd have two threads about the same thing going in this section.  But, you can certainly link over to it... or I can for ya!

Here's Bill's funny story:  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic. … 11#p172611

I don't have any funny gig stories.  I haven't had very many situations that could be considered actual Gigs.  Pops and I took over an open mic once, and we were paid in drinks (it wasn't supposed to be for pay, but no one else showed up so we kept the place going with music).  I got paid to sing at a wedding ceremony - that was awesome, nothing funny happened.  LOL!

Loving your stories though!  Keep em coming.

I agree with Zurf and Amy--keep 'em coming!! There are some great story here from some terrific local artists in this group, I"m sure.  I just went and saw my ukulele addiction "dealer"--HA! play in his ukulele jam band and saw an AMAZING guitarist!! If I get the umption, I'll post a link in the local bands thread--but it reminded me of how important it is to support local bands!! smile

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

I have a number of noteworthy stories. Not haha funny..but here goes one, by way of example:

I was once paid $800 for 5 minutes of work, not counting load in. We were playing at a favorite Irish pub and had just loaded in our gear and started our first song. A cook runs out of the kitchen disgusted. Before we start song number two, the manager walks up and asks me to step off mic for a second.

I step to the side, and he explains that someone had an "issue" in the restroom, clogged a toilet, backed up the whole system, a pump failed and the restrooms were - much to our disgust - backing up into the kitchen. We had an airtight contract with the place, so we made our full night's pay, but the bar closed down at 8.15. It opened up a couple of days later and we played a make up gig, and were booked monthly at the place for another year or so.

We liked to drop funk bombs when we played, but generally not that type....

Re: Got A Funny "GIG STORY" You Wanna Share....

Back in Grade 12, I subbed for a couple months in a soul group, because their guitarist had broke his hand. I did 5 gigs with them which were all High School dances. Our repertoire was Kool & the Gang, Stevie Wonder, War, Curtis Mayfield, Earth Wind & Fire, etc. We were tolerably good enough to dance to, but not much more. The funny part was that I was the only Caucasian in the group of six, but we were all solid friends and got along great. When our lead singer (Roger) introduced the band members, he always referred to me as "the honky on guitar", and we aways laughed like crazy. And I was given space to do a funk-style wah-wah solo in Wild Cherry's song (you guessed it) "Play that Funky Music, White Boy".

I was very fortunate to live in a small community, where racism was pretty much non-existent.

Tenement
I think you come from a community that has real good values. I am a white guy born to  a English father and a part Fijian mother. As a kid I never thought of skin colour as on my mother side we are of all colours.  As a kid  living in Fiji for a while I  never noticed that I was one of the few white kids around.   Colour meant nothing apart from wishing my skin was darker so that I could handle the sun better.
