Topic: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

I'm going to try to keep this primarily female singer-songwriters... but in the event I just have to post something else, this could also include male singer-songwriters (you know, there could be a NEED to add a Midget Song or something about a Dead Skunk).

So, I'll start it off with a Lady!

Ingrid Michaelson - 'The Way I Am" :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR7-N_enqvI

Some of you may recall hearing me do this one on Dec. 31st for Bill and Dondra.  I've sung this a bunch of times for MekidsDad as well.  smile  <3  Ms. Michaelson is leaps and bounds more amazing than I could ever hope to be.

I also laughed along with their "Acoustic Punk" Version of the song here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3RPD3zQBRI

And... just for the fact that I adore this one (and have done it as well, again, no where near her vocal ability), "Sort Of" - which GOOGLE featured in one of their ads at one point for Father's Day; you might recognize the tinkle of the piano:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFOSMOL3EDQ

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Right on, Amy ... right on! What a great idea for a weekly thread, and a stellar way to start it. I'd never heard of Ingrid, and found myself smiling all the way through. Super stuff!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Great find, I never heard of her till now. I particularly enjoyed  Sort of. The vocal gymnastics reminds me in many ways of Joni. You've set the bar pretty high for yourself Amy, an excellent start.

smile  Glad you guys liked it and approve!  As a female who is more into singing than guitar playing, I've got quite a few of female singers up my sleeve!  smile  More.. next week! wink

Awesome !    This song was a perfect selection.  She reminds me so much of my daughter.
This song has shot to the top of my playlist.

Thank you so much !!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

KIR mentioned Joni Mitchell ... an amazing talent. Her song "Twisted" is one of the quirkiest songs ever, really showcases her vocal abilities, and is super-fun to memorize and sing.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Today, I bring you Rob Schneider's daughter.  One of her songs has made it to the charts this past year, and it's the first time I heard of her, but she's got a bunch of quirky songs and has been singing and playing for a while. Most of her songs paint a picture of feelings, talking about the uglier side of life from the point of view of someone who's not interested in being hurt any more, they're pretty rough, bringing out that mean angry side.  Hurt, angry, protected, woman, what that gravelly edge.  I bring you Elle King!

Elle King-Good To Be A Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFqZTcP9Yck
Elle King - I Told You I Was Mean - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNCmbg1Suac

And of course, the song that has become quite famous over the past year or so... this is one of my favorite versions of her playing it acoustic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHCagjfXTIQ

WARNING - the song that MIGHT play right AFTER one of those links (if auto play is on for you),  is NOT suitable for children - I didn't link to it, but ... it did come up after the last one.  YAY for headphones.  wink Watch out for the "R" rated song.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Sorry!  This has been a busy week, so I'm a bit late.  However, I'm going to bring you something realllllllllly special today!  This song was written by a 14 year old girl, who began writing songs at the age of 9 years old.  She's pretty gosh darn amazing.  Now 16, she's written over 250 songs and several are dedicated to charitable causes.

As today is April 2nd - National Autism Awareness Day, I'd like to dedicate this post to my own little firefly.  wink  My youngest daughter is on the Autism Spectrum.  If you don't know much about Autism, or think of "Rain Man" when you think of Autism, please take a little time to learn more.  Because, "If you've met one person with autism – you've met one person with autism."  Autism is a spectrum, and each person affected will have different strengths as well as different weaknesses.  The more the public knows, the less difficult the lives are for those on the spectrum, as well as their families.

"Firefly" by Sophie Rose:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1grlLGf … e=youtu.be

If you view the song information on Youtube, you'll find that the proceeds of the sale of this song go to a well known Autism Charity, ACT.  As well, the lyrics and chords are posted should you wish to try to play along.

Good one Amy !!
Great song -  great exposure to dealing with Autism.

It's up to everyone to to see the glow of the fireflies - it's always there - just have to open  our eyes in a different fashion sometimes.

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Glad you all enjoyed the late addition last week!  smile

This week we've got a 3 sister folk-rock band from England. The sisters have amazing harmony, this is ear candy people!
Emily - vocals
Jessica - vocals, guitar
Camilla - vocals, ukulele

They began performing as The Staveley-Taylors at open-mic nights at a local pub, The Horns, and later changed their name to The Staves.

Wow ... they're amazing!

I was immediately captivated by the alto voice, when she came in at around 0:38 ... very rich. Beautiful melody and harmonies, and very well performed.

Great post, MKM!

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Completely agree!! Another stellar find!! The single guitar with the three voices is amazing. There's nothing like tearing family voices and harmonies together. And I also enjoyed that they kept the video production interesting but not distracting from the real stars!! Thank you!! I know life gets busy but you find such wonderful listens!! Greatly appreciate it! smile

Re: Thursday's Quirky Singer-Songwriters

Jasmine Thompson... another amazing voice for you this lovely Thursday!  She was "discovered" at 13 on YouTube for her covers of popular songs. Her debut album, Bundle of Tantrums, was self-released while she continued songs on YouTube.  She's earned some airtime for sure, and has quite a beautiful voice.  Sometimes high and sometimes smoky low.  Enjoy!
