Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Man!!! I feel like a traitor not having kept up with my boys in a couple of weeks now, but once I get settled in a bit more, I plan to catch what I can on ESPN.

Not great entertainment, but at least England won. Might be a handy boost to Harry Kane's confidence, too! Harry Kane? Sounds a bit like a Dylan song...

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

My brother and I are watching the Liverpool VS Manchester United game at his place this coming Saturday, and we're each fans of the opposite teams. We're going a throw a couple steaks on the BBQ, but one of us will be eating crow!

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/matc … -liverpool

I'd love to see ManU use a 4-4-2 shape, which has the potential to create real panic amongst defenders. As I've said before, the single-striker formation is just too easy to defend against. From my omniscient armchair view (LOL) I'd line them up like this:

GOAL: Romero

BACKS: Darmian - Smalling - Rojo - Shaw

MIDS: Mata - Fellaini - Schweinsteiger - Young

STRIKERS: Rooney - Memphis

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Okay TF, I hear ManU beat Liverpool.......... so who had the Crow and how was it?  My guess is kinda like chicken but "gamier" and a bit stringy.

I'm the ManU fan, Doug, so I got the bragging rights this time around ... which means I can call him a Scouser for this week! (LOL) We actually BBQ'd a couple of sirloins, so "crow" was officially off the menu. Man City looks unstopppable, don't they?

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Yup, that's the Liverpool fans holding the banner, not the ManU fans ... they wouldn't dare! (LOL). I've heard folks from Manchester referred to as "Mancurians", but expect there are more insulting terms used for them in Liverpool.

Even though ManU won the match, the best goal was from Liverpool's Christian Benteke by far, and will deserve replay for a long time:

Good result for ManU. Spurs won as well! Wonders will never cease...

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Congrats to Bayern-Munich for the 3-0 victory over Darmstadt yesterday. They were pretty much in complete control of the whole match.

That was a chippy affair yesterday between Chelsea & Arsenal, eh? I think Arsene Wenger did well to keep his composure at the post-match press conference. The officiating was very lop-sided against him, and Diego Costa seemed to be able act like a jerk with impunity. How he keeps getting away with whacking people in the face like this is beyond me! I'd like to see him try treating guys like Kompany, Lukaku, or Gomis like this ... he'd be flattened immediately.

My guys from Man United take on Southampton today, and a win will vault them into 2nd place once the weekend's over. Taking the telephone off the hook for this one!

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Another resounding win for Spurs! Well, they all count...
TF - it's about time that video evidence was used to stamp this out. They do this for rugby, I think. If not "live", then at a later date, with lengthy bans for the cheats & thugs.

Are you serious, Robert Lewandowski?! Bayern Munich striker just scored 5 goals in 9 minutes! That's a World Record, I believe, TF!

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Hi All,

Growing up in New York City I was never much of soccer (football/futbol) fan.  We had too many professional American sports to watch.  There was a brief romance in the late 70's with the NY Cosmos, and their aging European stars, but that died after a few short years.  Fast forward to being a father of 3 girls in Florida, only one of which played club soccer.  Then one day my oldest starts watching Barcelona matches, because the players are "cute".  So being a stubborn, uneducated American sports fan, I tell her soccer is boring, no scoring, and full of prima donnas.  Well, I'm sure you can figure out how that went over with a teenage girl.  So I put my tail between my legs, apologized and gave soccer a chance.  Watched mostly La Liga and EPL matches and started to learn the formations and strategies. Then one day went to see Barcelona with her when they came to South Florida and I could not believe the excitement. The stadium was full, the chants were magical and the atmosphere was electrical.   I was hooked.  I've since been to numerous matches, many of the Guinness Challenge matches and learned the names of players and teams I never knew existed.

I now either watch live or set my DVR to record as many matches as possible.  I have a hard time convincing my coworkers at the firehouse to sit through an entire match, but many are coming around.  Still favor EPL (Chelsea) and La Liga (Barca) but watch many Bundesliga and Italian league matches as well.  Visited Spain and Italy this spring and went to both Bernabeu and Camp Nou stadiums, as well as AS Roma.  Spent one of the best nights of my life in a pub in Barcelona to watch a Classico against Madrid (tickets were over 400 Euro, so we watched on TV)  Looking forward to visiting London next year and at least getting to Stamford Bridge and Emirates Stadium while there.  Unfortunately, it's an international break so I won't get to see any matches live.

I guess this long winded post is more of a confession of how I came to love soccer, and a humble apology for trashing it for all those years.  I still watch my Baseball/Football/Hockey games, but I enjoy my soccer just as much, if not more.

Regards to all,

Adam

Do what's right. If you have to think about it, it's probably wrong.

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Wow, Bill ... that was some performance! I don't recall ever seeing anyone score 5 goals in a match, let alone doing it in 9 minutes. Manager Guardiola is either looking like a putz (for not starting him) or a genius (for putting him on after the halftime break). Either way, it's memorable. I recall Ruud van Nistelroy scoring 4 in a match about 10 years ago (or more) for Man U, although I can't recall who the "victims" were.

Kodiak ... thanks for telling about your journey towards being a "soccer" fan. I played during school years, but never started following pro leagues (EPL, UEFA, Bundesliga, etc.) until I began coaching U18 boys in 1996. It also wasn't a sport that received much television coverage in North America, until more recent years. I started watching simply to learn about formations, strategies, set pieces, etc., but soon fell in love with the game itself on a whole new level.

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Norm ... good luck to your Spurs tomorrow against Man City. Of course I'm for their win (as well as a Man U win against Sunderland) 'cuz that'll vault my lads into first place. Did you see Bournemouth's Matt Ritchie score against Sunderland recently? One of the best goals I've ever seen ... absolutely brilliant skill:

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Some great results today:

Man United 3 --- Sunderland 0
Tottenham 4 --- Man City 1
Arsenal 5 --- Leicester 2
Liverpool 3 --- AstonVilla 2

Nice to see your Spurs jump up to 5th place, Norm, and I'm going to savor my guys being in first place for the moment. Don't know what's wrong with your Blues, Kodiak, but I can't imagine them staying in the lower part of the table for very long ... they've got too much talent.

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Thanks, TF! We were a bit lucky to get linesmen that didn't know the offside rule, but we'll take it...
Cheers!

Ugleeeee!!!

That's what yesterday's 3-0 loss to Arsenal was for my ManU boys. Van Gaal forgot to tell them that nap time was over before they stepped on the pitch.

Just awful.

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

Yes, Man U not at their best. But Kane scored again! Unfortunately it was in his own goal...
And, another player scoring 5 in a match - Sergio Aguero, for Man City vs Newcastle!

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

It would have been fun if Pellegrini had left Aguero on for the final 30 minutes. I'm sure he had a another goal in him, and he would have climbed above some elite players with 6 in a game. Newcastle's marking was desperately awful ... they couldn't have kept track of a phone booth if one were on the pitch.

Re: EPL Soccer - 2015/2016 Season

I'm getting a bit frustrated with Louis Van Gaal's view of ManU's lack of scoring.

He said yesterday, "We have to improve our finishing." That's only true if they were actually attacking! Yesterday's 0-0 draw against Palace was another snooze-fest, with no urgency to their attack, and thus no panic amongst the defenders. Several teams are now using this 4-5-1 shape, which is basically trying not to lose, rather than trying to win.

Oh my ...
