Topic: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Well... we talked, we chatted, we determined that if someone comes over to our house who plays guitar... and that said person may want to play guitar at the same time as we are playing guitar... well that person might just need their own guitar to play.  (ahem... I happen to know Roger will be here for a bit, and I'm not so sure he'll want to lug a guitar along, and I MIGHT just want to play along with him and not just watch and take turns).

And so, without further ado...

Merida Diana
Model: DG15-BKGACES

http://www.meridaguitars.com/guitars/cl … 15-bkgaces

These aren't found in too many places here in the US - so I'd love to hear what any of our European friends think about the maker, model, etc... A local shop had bought a few at a show, and were selling them to see the response.  Cedar top.  Rosewood back and sides.  A little bling, but not too much.  The headstock is down right neat looking.  Seems like a mighty nice solid wood guitar for the price.  It sounds good.  It plays smooth.  Plus, it's pretty.  I like pretty things.  smile

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Great looking guitar Amy.  It looks like a kissing cousin to the LAG guitars from France.  My LAG is cedar top/hog back & sides.  The body shape, cutaway and shape of the headstock are all similar. Easy to play and very good tone. Perhaps LAG and Merida have their guitars made by the same Asian factory?

May I take a turn playing it in August?

The website says, "Vision Musical Instruments", I recall the label had something like that on it. I will double check!  It's entirely possible they are the same " mother" company!  And yes, of course you can play it!  That's what the "extra" guitar is for!!!!

Of course, you're welcome to try any of our guitars as well, not just the "dedicated extra".  big_smile

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Amazing how a decision like this can be absolutely reasonable yet completely illogical at the same time! MKM, I doubt there's anyone on this site that requires any lame form of excuse whatsoever for buying another guitar. You're in safe territory.

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Amy,
I think what you meant was that anyone ( like Roger) coming wouldn't want to lug their 5- 10 guitars with them. smile

That is a sweet looking guitar.

But in reality, someone could always be
1) getting the drinks
2) singing
3) dancing
4) helping those of us that aren't that good, play with best
4) calming the neighbors
5) or re-directing the po-po

while the ones w guitars are playing.  smile

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Yes to all the above!  Ha ha!

Well, we have a few handfulls of guitars around here... So there's plenty of extras, but we wanted at leat ONE extra that was decent.  smile  The fender is laminate and is "alright", our 10 year old has claimed it (and refuses to even try the new one so far).  The epiphone is a cruddy guitar, I think it has an inch of dust on it. My brother has my classical. There's an electric. There's a " play" kids guitar.  Then theres this one, my Martin, and Jim's Taylor. So.... Really.... It's like just ONE (decent) extra. Lol!

Tails, I still prefer my Martin. We shall see if I can force myself to put it down and record something on this one instead.  smile. It does seem to have a well rounded sound, gotta change the strings still tho.  I do like the built in tuner. That's handy as heck!

Certainly, anyone visiting can do so without having to lug multiple guitars along!

I never got the ok on playing the Martin, well I will not be there anyways. I could be doing all these chores between playing. I could be your Hucklberry. I do not understand why the epiphone is not liked I have played a few and I think they are a good low end guitar.

But there's something about having your own guitar. When I got the Eastman awhile back, I couldn't understand why I was tripping over my fingers with songs I knew well. Came to find out that the Eastman neck is slightly narrower. It didn't take long to make the adjustment but it was different enough that I couldn't hit the strings right.

Epi was my first guitar in 1982. At the time I knew NOTHING about guitars. I bought it because I liked the tobacco sunburst finish. A year later I took someones advice and replaced the plastic nut and bridge with bone. Huge difference in the sound. Played it for 10 years and then took a guitar sabbatical while the kids were growing up and doing the sports thing. Pulled it out 2 years ago and still enjoy playing it.

I have played a couple of the epiphone's and have always enjoyed them,I see we had a simuler history,I did the sporrts thing also but I still played when I could. John Lennon loved epiphones and used one on the rootop concert(he also did the lead guitar on Get Back).

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

Here's another Epiphone endorsement. Their build quality is very good, and as long as person likes the way it plays and sounds, brand isn't an issue. I'm especially impressed with the ProBucker pickups in my EP Les Paul, which are built identically to Gibson 490's.

Re: NGD - The "extra" guitar

OH... nothing against Epiphones, just MINE is an el-cheapo.  LOL!  It's the DR-150.  It was a great first steel string for me to learn on though!  smile  I've played other Epiphones that I liked, a LOT... they however were NOT el-cheapos.  In fact, I believe I nearly fell in love with TopDawg's Epi last year.

Dino - I refuse to answer your question unless you are really coming here.  You get your hiney here, and we'll barter!  LOL!  smile

Me Too!!

Epiphone is owned by Gibson and both products come down the production line practically side-by-side..... same specs, same tools and often the same hands!  A few changes in components and grading of the materials, but essentially the same in most respects (except price).  At one time there was a rumour that Gibsons with minor "blems" were branded with the Epi label, and generally a good value for the $$$.  I doubt that holds true, but if you are a "Lefty" and don't want to pay the Gibson "mutant tax", your only option is Epiphone IMO.

Good fit & finish, good tone, good Warranty, Great Customer Service!  Nuff Said....

I've played several Epiphone acoustics and liked most of them.  The sound and playability of the Epiphone "Masterbuilt" series acoustic electrics is top notch. A buddy had a Masterbuilt that was one of the best guitars I ever heard regardless of price - deep lows and ringing highs. I think that series was produced in Korea by Samick.

From what info I've found, Gibson stopped making Epiphones in the USA after 1969 and over the years have contracted then from several sources including Japan, Korea and since 2002 - China. In 1993-94 limited runs of the "Nashville USA" (archtops) and Anniversary series (acoustics) were made in the USA but I think those are the only USA-made ones since 1969. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

Regardless, Epi's have always been good value for the money.

Thanks for asking Cf2. The quote is from local musician Rick Barnes. I don't know if the ideas expressed are all his or he got it from someone else.

Last year I had the privilege of being one of three songwriters asked to participate in a "Sensory Serenade" - a live performance featuring music, poetry and art and the brain child of local musician Rick Barnes and artist John K. Victor. The audience listens to original music and poetry while watching artists create paintings live, taste various dishes, desserts and coffees as well as smell their aromas, and feel their warmth and textures. The idea is that all of the audience's senses are stimulated during the performance. John and Rick have been doing these for several years through the tri-state area (OH,KY,WV) and have sold out every performance.

At the beginning of the show Rick discusses the importance of art and music in our lives and how all of us have the ability to create something that is completely original - something that would never have been created by someone else. He encourages the audience members to find some creative media which they enjoy (painting, ceramics, sculpture, music, writing, woodworking, etc) and make their own original work. It may not be high quality but at least its theirs. He emphasizes that unlike discoveries in the sciences, famous works of art are unique and would not exist if the artist hadn't put forth the effort.
