Great stuff!

Emmett Chapman supposedly discovered tapping in 1969, and invented the "Chapman Stick" in the early 70's which was based on this technique. Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel) and Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report) were early users. Levin now has a band called "Stick Men", which is just himself, another stick user, and a drummer. It is generally noted that the first time tapping was used on a recording was by Genesis' guitarist Steve Hackett on their 1971 album, Nursery Cryme.

Herman Li, Bernhard Beibl, and Eddie Van Halen are very good "tappers" also. Here's a sample from "Stick Men":
