Topic: My Continuing B7 Problem

Thick arthritic fingers.

No probs putting them where they're supposed to be, except I can't get the B string to sound. Thumb is as far extended as I can get it, but still get that "thud".

Where would you all go on the neck to make it easier for me?

Under the fretboard you'll see the numbers 1-10. These are all the different variations of a B7. Maybe you can get one of them to work for you.

B chords are evil.  Once you accept that as fact, then you can begin to deal with not making them as close of friends as say, a C chord.

Granted B chord amnesty by King of the Mutants (Long live the king).

Bill, There's something you should know about brother Zurf....... he's always bashing on the B chord (note his Avatar).  Some of us can still remember when it was the F, and we are holding our breath waiting for the day he discovers dominant 7th b5 or #9 chords.  Russell granted him amnesty from the B but I'm not sure how to inoculate for those.

The problem with the "B" chord (personally) is the narrow standard width of most guitar necks. I play it, but it's much easier on the classical or the 12-string because of the 2" nut. Whoever decided that the typical 1 11/16" or 42mm nut was "right"? It's all their fault! (LOL)

SBB, look at UJ'sB post and look at the 10th variation. Very easy - barre the D, G, and B strings on the 4th fret with your index finger and use your middle finger on the E string at the 5th fret. This is the "Cowboy" way.

Sorry, Nela for not replying sooner, but I had to figure out who "SBB" is. smile I finally concluded it was me. Coincidentally, that is the exact chord formation I picked, thanks! smile

I keep waiting on you "long thumb" guys to paint eyes and a mouth on them and play with them like that just to kid me! smile

Right now, badeye, I'm just thrilled that I can go to B7! I've been ignoring a lot of tunes on Chordie because I dreaded having to play that first version with all the fingers crowded together.

Now, when one of guitar-playing friends (of which there is only one - he's  left handed and doesn't reverse his strings, so he's impossible to follow) hollers "B7!!", I'm there Dude! Thanks to Joe and Nela! smile

I also saw Russell stretch that pinky out and down on the instrumental he played for me! Jealous of him, too! smile

I know this is about a piano, but have any of you ever heard of "stretching a tenth?" (a chord that hits 10 white keys with one hand). I believe it is needed for playing the Mephisto Waltz.

I envy those of you who don't have arthritis in your hands!

Russell's extensible pinky, though impressive, is nothing.  Normtheguitar has an extra set of fingers in his palms.  They retract like cat claws, but they come out when he plays.

Icy hot works good,Russell and I both use it. I also have a arthrites open finger glove that helps alot. You can use an old sock on your hand instead of the glove a tight one with the end cut out.
