[E]Way back long ago [A]before
The [E]world had ever seen or heard of
[A]All the sounds we hear to[E]day
The [A]sounds of civilized man you [E]say
Of [B7]people going here and there
[A]Doing all the things that people dare
But [B7]not a lot of thought for how much
[A]Longer we can keep it up
[E]Taking smaller sips from the [B7]endless cup
Of Mother Nature’s [A]favorite recipe
[E]Long ago I was a [A]boy and
[E]All the sounds I heard back then
Were [A]far from what I hear to[E]day
But [A]thinking back I guess I’d [E]say
There [B7]was a faint resemblance
To [A]today’s sound so persistent
And if I put [B7]cotton in my ears
I think that I can [A]almost faintly hear
An [E]echo from those days so [B7]near
But really those days are [A]all so far away
I’ve [E]read many a book that [A]authors
[E]Predict the fall of man from prosper
[A]Back to days like long a[E]go
Like [A]back when life was moving [E]slower
Than the [B7]speed of life we’ve come to see
But these [A]tales of fiction seem to me
To [B7]paint rather rosy pictures
[A]Quite unlike the biblical scriptures
That [E]say tough times we’ll have to en[B7]dure
I think it’ll be [A]somewhere in between
