Topic: Guilty Pleasures

What do the team think?

Have you got a song you play that is somewhat uncool or embarassing?

My starter for ten, My wife and I have been known to play "If I had a hammer", Me on guitar, her on tenor recorder while the kids cringe and hide behind the sofa.

(having said that, Nanci Griffith does a good version on Other Voices too, a trip back to bountiful)

cheers

David

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Good subject Acme,
but who is willing to tell?
me!!! lol

I like to play 2 little boys by Rolf Harris. This make my wife leave the room. And if I ever pay it elsewhere I get lots of laughter and comments until I stop.

it is a great song.

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: Guilty Pleasures

OK I admit it. I too have a song I play very often but NEVER in front of anyone else, in fact I was playing it earlier today before I read this thread.

"The Cruel War", a 60's Peter Paul and Mary number. A beautiful song but it is a ladies song where she is asking to go to war with her man. So now you see why. I have even tried to re write it from the male perspective, but failed.

It is in my Songbook if you do not know it and is a one great to finger pick.

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Hi acmecorp

There is a song that I play fairly often to myself but is cringe worthy and so uncool but I admit I like it.

It's "Greensleeves" purported to be by Henry VIII

A bit sad I know. hmm

Re: Guilty Pleasures

No, that's cool, I learned that song years ago from a school music book.

Turned out that the book was wrong, my girlfriend at university showed me how it ended on a major not a minor, something called a Picardy third if I remember rightly, where a minor key song ends on a major.

I hope Welcome2myHead is listening, he might learn something smile

all the best

Re: Guilty Pleasures

"I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms and keep it company
I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills "Ah, peace throughout the land"

best if you don't start singing

"its the real thing"

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Interesting fact (NOT!)

You can play that melody using only the black keys on the piano.

(how do you do a yawning smiley)

Re: Guilty Pleasures

I like playing ye banks and braes, it was a song we used to sing in school.

Re: Guilty Pleasures

I must admit, Rhinestone Cowboy is one of my favorite songs and I won't keep it hidden anymore.

I'm gutted.

You mean I've been ending it wrong for these years. On a minor not a major. Well that must be the reason it just does'nt feel cool to me!
a Picardy third I must remember that one. smile

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Ok I'll step up to the plate...gonna kick myself for this,

Evergreen-Barbara Streisand     it has great chord changes
Rainbows all over your blues - John Sebastian
Leaving on a jet plane  PP&M
Puff The Magic Dragon  PP&M

Probably many more but hey they are fun to play!

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket babe

Re: Guilty Pleasures

I forgot Puff the Magic Dragon, I used to do that one for my daughter when she didn't spend her time insulting me and begging for money.

Here's another puke turning revelation, I once got my daughter to provide the vocals for Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, while I was testing a mixing desk and a bunch of recording and sequencing software.

Suffice to say she rapidly got pissed off with the results.

Ah kids, don't you love 'em

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Where in darnation is Cape Breton Island, Badeye?

You may be a guitar player, but you sure do have a strange address.
By the way, where would one find Coney Island (I think Lou Read mentioned it once or twice)

yours quizically

David

Re: Guilty Pleasures

Cape Breton Island in on the east coast of Canada it's part of the Province of Nova Scotia. I think Coney Island is on the coast of  New York City in eastern USA. Lou Reed hails from New York. He has some great tunes eh.

Take Care....Badeye.
