Topic: Open G tuning

Is there anyway in Chordie to search for open G songs?  I'm just beginning guitar and find it easier to play

Re: Open G tuning

Hi jimpias and welcome to the forum. I do not know of any songs with only I chord. You might look at the section that has the Public songbooks and look at the beginners songbooks. I think you need too learn a couple more chords too do a whole song, some easy chords are c,a,d and e.

Re: Open G tuning

I  presume  Jimpias    wants  to  just  bar  a  chord  at  what  ever  position it  occurs  on the  neck   using  open G  .I  would  suggest  use  open E instead  as  the  bar  chords  come  up in the  normal  position  this  way   eg  E  open,  F   fret  1, G  fret  3.  A fret  5, B fret 7 and  so  on  If  you  look  at  video  of  Ritchie Havens  he  appears  to  use  this  method  check  the  Woodstock  video  for example

Re: Open G tuning

For the most part you can play anything you can find in standard tuning in open G tuning... the chord shapes change for the tuning, but most are either two/three fingerings or barre.  It does help to know a bit about building chords and voicings from the notes they contain, but I personally can see no reason any song couldn't be played in an open tuning.

As for why one would want to play in an open tuning all the time, unless you are really into slide guitar?  For me it would be a wash, I play barre and open chords interchangeably, so for most music there is no advantage from a difficulty standpoint in changing tuning except with a capo.

Different strokes I guess and if you are trying to get a good handle towards slide guitar as your prime genre, why not?

There are chord charts available to print for various open tunings out there, so have at it!  and Above All Have Fun!!

Re: Open G tuning

You gotta be careful when playing in open tunings. Anytime you go up you put more tension on the guitar neck, bridge and bridge pins. If your guitar is not built to withstand this added pressure you could do serious damage to your instrument. My advice would be to have your guitar checked out by a good "tech" or a "luither"
prior taking this step.

Dino, can't remember the song title but the "O'Kanes" had a song that was played with one chord. Just grab a "G" chord and get after it.

Re: Open G tuning

hello dear jimpias, you should start  from the lowest sounding.I suggest u the tuning that is D G D G B D ,, 6th string.

The easy way to play the I IV and V chords in this tuning is

G: open strings, strings 1-5

C: Barre in fret 5, strings 1-5

D: Barre in fret 7, Strings 1-5
