Topic: Douglas V/S monoprice

Ok,, I have NGF New guitar fever,, Yet trying not to get in too deep.
We have all seen how nice the Douglas is from seeing Russells creations.  I am wanting a Les Paul and I want to do, as close as possible an ACE replica.  Did some homework and GFS does not make ivory classic hot 59s in that color, but they do make the Power Rails.
as for the guitars,

and the monoprice

The one thing the mono price has going for it is I have always loved the honeyburst/ cherry.  Both guitars have been used by ACE as well as the B&W. ( One mod I will have to do is add a 3rd pick up.  Idont know what that will cost me so it will have to wait)and its cut out is deeper and sharper cut.  I guess what my main Question is , is do you guys think this set of pick ups will look good even if they are notexact? I know that they sound great due to having them in another guitar.   http://www.guitarfetish.com/assets/images/products/gfsporacrpok2.jpg
but they also have just chrome in a upgraded PAF http://www.guitarfetish.com/Crunchy-Pat … _c_48.html

For any of the tinkering types, once I add in a 3rd pick up,, how does that figure in the 3 position switch?

Howdy Beamer,  Like the rails a lot as pickups go..... But then again I was also a fan of the classic Lace pickups too.

A couple of things to ponder, and not having modded any LPs perhaps someone will know for sure.... Les Pauls don't have much in the way of access to the inner workings for things like routing wiring from your center PUP.  Something to consider when you are just about to sink your plunge router into it's face..... let's see..... bondo, primer/filler, paint.... we CAN fix anything!!!

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

I was just looking at my LP, and I don't think I'd try to do the routing and stuff you're thinking about ... but that's just me. The advantage of Fender-style guitars has to do with access, since the pickguard on top opens to the whole electronic shmozzle underneath. The only access on the LP is a small back hatch under the vol / tone controls, and a smaller hatch under the pickup switch. Are you thnking of a 3-pickup design like their "Black Beauty" ? (Peter Frampton's fav):

Sounds like an ambitious project, Beamer ... I hope it all goes well.

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

Just my 2 cents, Beamer my Douglass totally screams in the treble position the tone is sharp and clean with tons of sustain in my honest opinion no third pickup is needed I am running it through my Boss ME-50 if I want a strat sound I use one of my strats smile

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

Hey guys thanks, FYI, the center PU is mainly because I am going for the ACE guitar look.  My thoughts are also to coil tap the center so I can run a H S configuration, its a mean sound.  I think I am sold on the Mono price mainly cause its the honey burst, and has the sharper cutout.  as for the mods, it will be a slow process,, gotta get teh parts past momma! LOLOL  found a YT vid of a guy modding one and I wrote all his mods down.  here is his list:
the monoprice,
rollermatic bridge (22 bucks)  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chrome-Roller-T … 23386b3a15
A bone nut

and he used locking tuners but Ill go with Grover-Trophy 102 Rotomatics 41.00

so just in parts im looking at 250 +/- before  labor. (not even using the 3rd PU at this time)  Maybe I can do it,, I guess Ill try. but I dont know how to coil tap and that req a diff control knob right?

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

Beamer Buddy, you're giving me nightmares!  Seriously..... my little grey cells were grinding on your project the better part of last night.  My conclusion is.... yes it can be done!

I actually figured out two ways but both require cojones grandes.  The first is to get up against the largest band saw any of your friends owns.  It needs to have at least 13" of cutting height.  Slab off about 3/8" from the back and route in a channel for your wiring. Cut out the face for the additional pickup, Glue the back on after all your wires are run, and plan on refinishing the edges to match after you are done.

The second is to gut all the components out of the body and with a long 1/8" (like 18" worth) drill bit shoot a hole across the body diagonally through the jack hole, across the pot recess, and into the switch recess.  Increase sizes until you are comfortable that everything you need to run through it will fit, and then cutout for your third pickup and (hopefully you will hit your hole somewhere in that opening) AND YOU ARE GOOD TO GO!

Then again maybe I'm over thinking this.... they had to go from point A to point B, and just might have left you a passage.  Have to pull the pickups out and have a look.

As for switches, you are going to have to be a little bit creative, but this might be a good place to consider push-pull pots or at least one to tap and untap that center pickup, or drop it out of the chain completely.  Stewmac has all that stuff and lots of wiring diagrams, tutorials etc. that might be helpful.

LOLOL thanks Doug. when It comes to that 3rd Pick up Im going to take it directly to the Luthier that I trust LOLOLOL.  Ill still be happy with the 2 PU config and just have the bridge tapped.  but this is what I am shooting for:

If you decide to go with 3 you will need a 5 positon switch unless you plan on having a 3 way switch and only using one pickup at a time the 5 way switch lets you split the coils just like a strat but you would need to either know how to wire the pots or buy a pre wired harness in other words wire it like a strat instead of 4 control pots by pass one and use three 2 for tone and one for master volume GF sells them for around 24 dollars all you would need to do is wire the ground and input plug and your good to go

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

Epiphone did a limited run of ACE's "Budokan" LP a year or two ago, but I don't know if anyone still has any to sell or not:

http://www.epiphone.com/Products/Les-Pa … utfit.aspx

According to several online sources, it sold for under $1000.

A word about coil-tapping: My LP came with the 4-wire EPI ProBucker pickups, which are coil-tapped via push-pull volume knobs. They work very well, and really do give the guitar the single-coil or humbucker sounds. It really is two guitars in one.

Re: Douglas V/S monoprice

Russ , I knew I could count oun you smile

TF, Yep I really wantedone very bad, along withteh blueand silver ones. I just didnt have the $$$.

In all reality I will probably stay with the 2 ;ickups but coil tap each one.  go with the the rails, roller bridge, nut and tuners.

I can handle tuners, and probably the nut and bridge(bridge shouldbe a drop in). but ill let the luthier do the wireing job.
and the set up and dressing the frets.
