Topic: river

I have got the chords to River by joni mitchell but can any one tell me what time it's played in please ?

Re: river

Mitchell is a master at using unique tunings and meters.  'River' is a great example.

Seems to be in a mixed meter of 6/8, 2/4, 6/8, 2/4.  This gives the song that distinctive lilting yet hestitant feel.  Don't try to count it out - it will make you crazy.  Rather, get the feel of the meter in your bones, sway with it, and then get going on the song.

Great song from a fantastic album - my favorite off Blue is 'All I Want' which she played on a dulcimer.  Hope this helps. James

Re: river

Thank you James, that explains it.I play it how i think it should sound but was getting a bit confused, i suppose because i thought everything was always in the same time throughout the song.
I love Joni mitchell's music, have been listening to her since the early seventies but i find a lot of it is a real challenge to try and play.
My favourite albums are Blue, Court and spark and ladies of the canyon.
