Topic: guitar solo's

i know guitar solo's are out of fashion these days, but i was listening to Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty, and when it came to the guitar solo at the end i thought," not the most technical or super sonic solo i've ever heard but it fits so well." so i wondered if anyone else can think of a guitar solo that fits the song like a glove?

some others would be;

1. solo in Thin Lizzie's "Whiskey in the Jar"

2. Eagles "Take it Easy"

Intro solo to Industrial Disease by Dire Straights, even though the feature is keyboards.  The guitar part is distinctive, simple, and builds up a little at a time just like the sneaking suspicion that the floor manager is coming to your station.

I personally find that the two solos in Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" fit the song's message exceptionally well. The first solo sounds almost sad, as the writer wonders why all of his dreams are gone. The second solo is angry, as he now realizes that his dreams have been stolen.

Maybe I've completely misunderstood the song, but this is what it's mainly saying to me. I find it hard to listen to intently or play it when there's others around, as I almost always find a tear or two welling up. People think you're loco, but I can't help it. That's what good music sometimes does to me, and I don't mind saying that I love it.

+1 TF. Comfortably Numb (Pulse Live) contains the best guitar work in the history of music, IMO.

I have to say being the resident metal head, I really miss good soloing. You dont hear anyone talking about guitar slingers these days.  some of my favorite solos are off From Judas Priest. Noteably the cover of Diamonds and Rust from Sin after Sin and Victim of change from Sad wings of Destiny. 

For a current band I have to give it to Avenge 7 fold.  Their new album harkens their hero,,Megadeath and Iron Maiden (who to their own credit have many great solos).  Hail to the king pulls from Iron Maidens Wasted Years on the intro.  So there is hope yet, an dKirk Hammet keeps up the solos as wellas Dave mustain. (granted they are being who they are, just no one new can do it it seems)

I know its an oldie but the solo in python lee jacksons , in a broken dream , its got a sort of haunting sound that really fits the song , I'm probably the only one old enough to remember it !!

BGD ...  I agree wholeheartedly about the "Pulse" concert ... I've just about worn my DVD out. What seals it for me is Gilmour's demeanour throughout. He's so relaxed, and obviously enjoying himself, the interaction with his band-mates, and with the audience.

Brad Paisley has some amazing guitar work in his songs, but it generally isn't highlighted in solos.

Although I am more impressed by great lyrics rather than a searing solo. My favorite solos are by Carlos Santana. Especially in the song "Hope You`re Feeling Better" off the ABBRAXAS album. I can listen to it over and over.

I also think the intro and chorus licks on Funk #49 work darned well.  The intro sounds like someone kind of coming to a realization, then the chorus riffs sound kind of like a "so there" after the telling off in the lyrics.

Another LIKE for Funk #49 and most anything Joe Walsh has done. "Life's Been Good" is also a real hoot to play.
