Topic: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

I actually can sing in tune but my problem is starting in the right key. I've a good repertoire of songs I can sing reasonably well but I still can't stand up in front of an audience because I don't seem able to hit the correct KEY at the beginning. I'm either too high/low. Is their a quick solution? Advice would be welcome

Do  you  get   nervous or does  it  happen all the  time .If its all the  time  I would  just say  practice. If its just  when some ones listening try  to imagine  your on your own .But in either case warm up your vocal chords with a few  exercises before you start  then you don't strain

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

There is no quick solution.  Beamer posted some links to a guy who has some free on line voice lessons recently.  I think that was even here in Chat Corner.  Do a search for that post - I think he called it "Finding my voice" or something like that - and check out those videos.  See if they'll help.  Good luck with it.

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

Are you talking about being off key while you are singing and playing guitar or singing when the music comes from another source? The reason I ask is that due to hearing problems I also have a terrible time starting in tune while singing with a recording or while someone else is playing an instrument but when I can hold my acoustic against my chest and play I can do a reasonable job of starting and staying on key.

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

I just strum a chord, and hum or sing a single note to get "in key."  Then I start.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Maybe there is a quick solution after all.

Tha'ts why I posed my question. When I play and sing I either play a short intro to get the correct pitch in my head or if the song starts out with a vocal I start with the "key of M" (Zurf has heard me do this) in which I strum a chord and hum (hey, sounds like an "M" right?) to get in pitch before starting.

The last time we played together Dirty Ed, I recall that you were there and had some great new songs I hadn't heard before, but for some reason or another a few of the details are a bit fuzzy around the edges.

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

i call it hitting the pitch, while the intro is playing turn away from the mic and hum or whatever sound you feel most comfortable making. when you feel happy that you're in key, go for it.

of course it's always advisable to sing in your own comfy key. when i'm rehearsing a new song, i'll sing unaccompanied at full boar and try notes till i find the right key then just transpose the chords from the copy.

it can be a bit naughty if you have to learn a solo in Ab, i hate Ab!

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

Jerome is right on this one, I use a capo a lot and it is good practice to try different keys to find the sweet spot for your voice. When moving the capo around strum a chord and try a few different keys with the capo. It's good practice and helps your ear..............

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

Most of the time a song is going to start on a chord tone. Hit that note in the chord right before you start singing, hum in quietly in your head voice, and then start belting.

Re: Singing; Starting on the right KEY

It would be a lot simpler, I suppose, if I sang all my songs in one key but it's not possible and as well as that it probably be mighty boring. I've decided on a strategy. First I'll make a copy of  the first verse of every song. Secondly, i'll run through them as I drive along in the car, belting them out' and keep doing that for a number of weeks.Maybe by then they OPENING verse of each song will be deeply ingrained in my psyche so that I'll automatically start in the CORRECT key when I stand on stage next time. Here's  hoping!

You might consider interval training or solfeg training, too. Well worth the time and effort.
