Topic: Finding my voice

Im trying today to learn to sing better.   I know that when we as a group Skype and the assorted face to face gatherings, some of us sing (much) better than others.  I know we all sing with feeling,, but after 20 years of less accepting audiences (meaning other friends and the occasional new person) It has always bothered me to hear the comment “well you certainly have a lot of __(insert adjective)___ in that song.  There is no way at this point I can afford a vocal coach.  So I did what I should have done 5 yrs ago.  I went to YouTube and looked up vocal coach. I spent some time finding one that got right to it and made it fun. Wish I could afford a Skype lesson with him! So check out these if ya have some time.  I hope to be in better vocal shape as well as playing shape by Feb.
This guy rocks. He is a pro and I have felt a notable difference just doing this at work and hoping no one walk by and see/ hear me.

Re: Finding my voice

Thanks beamer - I really like this guys teaching approach. A lot like justinguitar. Step by step and easy to follow. Like you, I hope no one sees me doing the exercises LOL.

Rule No. 1 - If it sounds good - it is good!

Re: Finding my voice

This February I'm taking an all day harmonizing workshop with Tim and Molly O'Brien.  I'm completely stoked.  Mostly about being in the same room with Tim O'Brien for a whole day, but the singing help will be nice, too.  big_smile

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: Finding my voice

Thanks. I wanted to play the guitar for years. For the last five or so I have taught myself only to discover that I really need to be able to sing. I'm considering making 2014 the year of the song (and singing). I am terrified.

This is awesome!

Re: Finding my voice

I took lessons. He is good. I didn't watch all the vids just kinda skimmed through quick, so I might have missed one on breath control... if not, then thats the only major lesson I see missing.  Let me know if you need a primer there. wink

Art and beauty are in the eyes of the beholder.
What constitutes excellent music is in the ears of the listener.

Re: Finding my voice

Over the years my hearing has gone down hill and it was affecting my singing.  I was so concerned about being out of tune with my guitar that I found myself "holding back" instead of letting go with my voice ("preaching to the congregation" one of the local performers calls it).  When I play my acoustics, I find that holding them up closer to my chest allows me to "feel" the vibrations and do a better job of singing in key.  All my current guitars are smaller bodied (000/grand concert size) and when seated, instead of putting the waist of the acoustic across my knee like most pickers do, I place the lower bout on my leg and that positions the area behind the sound hole up against my chest. If I tilt the top of the guitar back ever so slightly, it really helps me to both hear and feel the vibrations with the guitar still projecting out toward my audience. Knowing that my voice is in tune with my guitar gives me a lot more confidence while singing.

Its something you might want to try Scott.

Re: Finding my voice

I have the other side of this problem.  I have always had a decent voice, now if I could only play guitar better while singing, I might stand a chance.

You can see all my video covers on http://www.youtube.com/bensonp1000
I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.
