In 1970 CSNY sang 'four dead in Ohio" in their song "Ohio" written in response May 4, 1970 Kent State incident. Almost forty-three years to the day of this event three women were discovered being held captive outside Cleveland, Ohio. This is a tragic situation but it's not about plastic guns and 3D printers. In fact, nary a weapon has been mentioned thus far. No, sadly the crux of this issue is far more sinister. The real issue is our society's increasing appetite for human apathy. I've read the opposite of love is not hate but apathy. This situation in Ohio is a vivid example. I'm not saying the neighbors are evil just part of a society which allows if not encourages apathy.

I'm guilty. I live in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. There are 360 homes in my neighborhood and approximately 20 homes on my street. Many neighbors but how many do I know? How many do I routinely talk to, barbecue with, or visit? Virtually none. Not all of America is like this but I'm sure I'm not alone in this. As far as I know something as sinister as this kidnapping could be occurring next door to me. I don't know. Why just yesterday my wife told me a boy who lives four doors down the street from us overdosed on heroin this week. I don't know the boy, never met him but I drive by his house everyday. I may have spoken to his mother once. I do wave at her when I see her working in the yard. Is this okay? Is this the way we unite as neighbors? As a nation?

Charles Ramsey is a hero. He chose to "love" his neighbor by saying no to apathy. God bless him for it! He should be celebrated as a hero and his actions heralded as what is expected in this countryl

I've knocked on every door in my neighborhood.  I've been inside probably about a third of the homes.  Our neighborhood (residential zone) is between a library (commercial zone) and a hospital (commercial zone) so we have special case things come up with the town from time to time.  When these affect our neighborhood, my wife and I bring it to the attention of our neighbors so we can act in concert.  If you want to get to know your neighbors, go meet them.  All the dog walkers know one another pretty well.  Also, I sit on a porch swing on a frame out in our front yard and pick guitar.  Folks come by and chat.  It's great.  As a result, we frequently have informal get togethers on the spur of the moment.  Just Sunday we had a Cinco de Mayo party with fifteen folks at the house that no one even thought to do it until 2:00.  By 5:00, we had dinner, drinks, games, and folks dropping in.  Everyone pitched in some and so no one had any burden.  Good stuff.

I have not gone knocking on doors, but i keep an eye out for anything strange.  I walk up and introducemyself to people I see in their yards and I do know most teh people on my side street and the other end of the block.

Has anyone heard of the study on why neighbors do not know each other well anymore?  It boils down to two words  AIR CONDITIONING  In the days befor it, everyone sat out in their yards because the house was hotter.  you would talk back and forth from yard to yard and everyones kids played together.  Not so much anymore.  What! its 100 out there, im staying right here in my cool 68 degree room in my  lazy boy!

Ill admit in the summer in TX for the past few yrs with 102+ temps,, we dont go out till after dusk! LOLOL

They should relax, because it's not.  It is long since settled law that the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right, and no one wants to change that.   All the "They're gonna take our guns!!!" paranoia is simply hysteria intended to drum up sales.  And if the price of 9mm and .45 is any indicator, it's been entirely successful.

I live in Wyoming and know every one by name In our subdivision all 10 family's. as far as guns go I had s guy at the part shop say I bet you have a lot of gun I thought for a minute and ask him what he thought was a lot he said over ten then I smiled and then said ya I have lot.

Does this apply to a person with one guitar?

No, it's not.  The Constitution doesn't give you the right to bear arms, it says the government will not impede your right to bear arms.   That right exists whether the Constitution says anything about it or not.   This is an issue settled by the Supreme Court in DC vs Heller.  It is an individual right.   

There are plenty of people that would change all kinds of stuff about everything.  It doesn't mean they can.    No one is going to take guns away from anyone.   It's a dead issue for everyone except people that need you to be afraid that someone is going to take your guns.  They aren't.  So relax.
